Popular Post Goat Posted February 15, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted February 15, 2019 (edited) I finally purchased a scroll saw (Delta 40-694) and figured I'd share my first project. This is also my first project I used all natural colored wood (except the dowel for his eye). I just finished gluing it up. Its a coackatiel I made for my nephew's birthday next month. I tried to make the bird's colors look as close to his bird as I could. It has Yellow Heart, Padauk, Red Cedar, Oak, Aspen, Pine and a Poplar dowel I stained black. I found one board of pine at Menards that had allot of gray. I entered the project ready to use stains, already had a board with a nice grain pattern picked out. Then I found the gray pine just by chance. I used the Old Masters Gel Poly as a finish and a water based poly from Walmart on the Aspen. As far as the project went, it was a bit of a learning curve. I had to scrap a few pieces while I figured out what blade, speed and tension to use (as you might have seen in other post I made). I also tried my hand at fixing gaps and was pretty successful. Another thing I tried for the first time was sanding shims, they work great but I kinda got carried away and took more off that I wanted. I also had issues with the back board where the saw would break the delicate areas of his head feathers and tail feathers, so those have very little backer. And another first for me was pre-drilling the hole for the padauk. It was pretty neat to be able to cut on the inside like that. Then I very carefully cut the padauk circle. I was very pleased with the fit, I tapped it in with a rubber mallet and its almost perfect aside from the grain direction as I didnt pay enough attention when I made the pattern. So I tried allot of new things in this project, there are several areas I wish I could have done better, but overall I think it looks OK and I hope his new owner will be happy. Sycamore67 Posted February 15, 2019 Report Posted February 15, 2019 Well done... You have good cuts and I like that you did not round the edge of every piece like on some that are posted. The feathers look good and excellent choice of woods and grain direction. Quote
