My wife is very good at painting but thought she would try something easy, paint by numbers. Not easy. The new patterns are very complicated and time consuming. She found an old British war ship she thought I would like. 5 days of straight painting but the results are great! I decided I needed to make a nice frame for her work. I found a picture frame router bit with a nice pattern and went to work. It's amazing how much wood is required. I needed 2 each 6' 3" x 3/4" pine boards to frame the 16 x 20 painting. I had to feed the boards 1/8" depth at a time to avoid bogging down the router. I had all sorts of feather boards and clamp guides to hold everything in place for the cut. I found out that if I paused while pushing through the wood, I would get spauld marks on the wood. I had to hand sand out some. The inside edge was very small  so I had to add an additional 1/2" backer piece for the picture around the outside in the back. More wood... I had to cut the miter first on those pieces and then trim away the inside on the table saw for the border/recess to hold the picture in place for the 1/4" gap.  I glued and pin nailed the backing to the frame and painted. A lot more wood and work than I expected but I like the results and it compliments my wife's fine painting.

That is a beautiful picture.  Your frame sets it off well.  Gotta love the beauty of the old sailing ships.  When my wife and I were young and not married very long we did several paint by numbers picture.  Nothing as complex as yours.  But it was fun and very relaxing.

Great job. Great narrative of work involved. Please take a picture or two, close-up, of the frame so we can see the profile in detail.

Pictures always help. I got the router bit from Yonico. They have a good selection and at fair price, "Z" push tool came from Rockler. Wood was from my local Lowes. I cut the miters on my miter sled with a stop guide though a dialed in miter saw would have worked also. I believe there are some members of the group that had a framing business and can offer more insight. This was my 1st attempt on a larger frame.
