BroBri Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 There has been a lot of talk about the dewalt dw788. In a recent post someone got a type 1 dewalt. There were a few recommendations for getting a new delta instead. Now that I got 'Peggy' my new Pegas my 2 older grandaighthers are watching YouTube videos wanting to do Fretwork and Intarsia. I need to get something for them to use. Can you give me a vote. Type 1 or new delta. I've got a type 1 with stand lined up for $240. I can't find any old Excalibers on Craigslist or ebay.. Roberta Moreton Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Everyone will give you different answers. I am not wanting to keep tearing something apart to fix it. I would but the new saw. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
GrampaJim Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 I used a Type 1 Dewalt for years and liked it. If it is between one of those, which are really old BTW, and a new Delta, I would go with the Delta. And I would see about the cost of an extended warranty, depending on the cost. Just my two cents, Jim OCtoolguy 1 Quote
dgman Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Yup, a type 1 is at least twenty years old. Sooner or later, the bearings will have to be replaced, so you have to add whatever the cost of bearings and sleeves plus the down time. For the money, I would go with a new saw with a warranty. BroBri Posted February 29, 2020 Author Report Posted February 29, 2020 So far 3 votes for Delta. On erreplacements.com they only show sleeves as an option. No bearings are listed OCtoolguy 1 Quote

I also bought a small arbor press at H/F but never needed it. If it were me, and keep in mind that I love to fix stuff and work on things, I'd go for the type 1 but I'd have to dicker for a better price unless it is really clean. No rust on the table and not all beat up. The one I bought originally was so old that it still had the tubular stand. I've never seen another one like it. But, it was a great saw and just got better with a good grease job. I guess it just depends on YOU. GrampaJim, BroBri and amazingkevin 3 Quote

NOW.. that was for ALL bearings and ALL sleeves.. plus the complete connecting rod ( motor to rockshaft ).. Most times you don't necessarily NEED all of them.. But my saw was run hard. rebuilt 2 years after it was new.. then run really hard for about 6 more years.. so I was planning to just replace everything.. Many times if you can get to it with some high end grease BEFORE it needs bearings you can get a lot of years out of them..I just let it go a long time and it was getting noisy.. 6 hours ago, BroBri said: So far 3 votes for Delta. Both Home depot and Amazon several times a year run a sale on the delta for $299.. sometimes new in box saws on eBay come up for $250..The Delta carries a 5 year warranty as well.. The Delta also comes with a upper arm lock.. raise it up and it stays..BUT the bad thing is.. there is a release button on the side to let it come back down.. The DW would need something to hold it up... and maybe someone has put a aftermarket lift on it.. if not then a block of wood works but to me is not as convenient as a Jim Dandy easy lift.. there is also one called " the lifter" or something like that.. dgman Posted March 1, 2020 Report Posted March 1, 2020 I have said this a hundred times, if you are a top feeder, you don’t need an arm lift. Even to replace a blade there is no need to lift the arm. The only time I need the arm to stay up on its own is when I wax the table. BroBri, kmmcrafts, amazingkevin and 2 others 4 1 Quote
new2woodwrk Posted March 1, 2020 Report Posted March 1, 2020 I'm biased and poor, I bought the Delta and love it. Then again I've only used two - the Wen and the Delta amazingkevin, BroBri and OCtoolguy 2 1 Quote

I never thought about it that way.. though I guess because I'm not a top feeder is probably a big reason why I never thought of that.. Even though.. the original poster should know about this in either case.. since not knowing whether they are top or bottom feeder.. I'm glad you mentioned this though.. amazingkevin and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
BroBri Posted March 1, 2020 Author Report Posted March 1, 2020 I ordered the delta. At 12:15am Sunday I noticed I only had a day to make the decision. Last day it's on sale kmmcrafts, OCtoolguy and amazingkevin 3 Quote
jerry1939 Posted March 1, 2020 Report Posted March 1, 2020 I retired from the hobby. Loved my Delta. Took it apart annually & greased it. Would think that if you ever need parts, order them for a Dewalt. Schematics look to be the same. jerry amazingkevin, BroBri and OCtoolguy 2 1 Quote
Fedido Posted March 2, 2020 Report Posted March 2, 2020 I am sure I was the one that was referred to whether to buy a dewalt or delta. It all comes down to personal tastes/resources. I live in a small community in which it doesn't matter what I buy, I will have to drive to get it. My personal preference is to buy North American products. Downtime doesn't mean a thing to me because I am only in for the hobby. With all that said, I am in absolute love with my Dewalt type 1 and 240 is about what I paid for it. I might have been just lucky, but it was not used much and as soon as I plugged it in, it ran like a dream. I am so happy with it. I usually spend about an hour every day after work and about 4 to 6 hours on the weekend with it. Like I said, it boils down to what your situation is and preference. Warranties are great, only if you have a reasonably close place to have it fulfilled. Either way, I am sure you will make the right decision for you. BroBri, amazingkevin and OCtoolguy 2 1 Quote

funeralguy82 Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 I just ordered the delta to replace my Craftsman... My main reason was to save on cost vs the dewalt. At the same time... I ordered the Pegas chucks... from what I can tell from reviews... the Pegas chucks make a great improvement to the saw. I hope I am happy with my decision. BroBri and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
amazingkevin Posted March 5, 2020 Report Posted March 5, 2020 New is always nice!!! I have lots of back up dewalts . I hate down time! Got them cheap 1 at a time. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Just put the delta saw together using the pegas chucks! Minimal cussing involved! Once it was all buttoned up... WOW... it is a great upgrade to the craftsman it replaced! It is on the coffee table now... the delta stand arrives Monday. PLEASE NOTE... That is my daughter by the saw and it is now unplugged until the stand arrives. Thanks to everyone here for giving me hope that this saw is worth the risk. I can’t wait to tackle some more detailed patterns! OCtoolguy 1 Quote
