ben2008 Posted May 6, 2020 Report Posted May 6, 2020 (edited) Looking to dye 2 pieces of aspen a bright yellow and black for an intarsia project. I was going to just buy some Rit dye and see what happens, but I thought I would ask the experts here first. I have never done this before. I have always just used the natural color of the wood, I can use Yellowheart for the yellow, but there really is no affordable black wood. Any recommendations on what dyes to use Thanks Ben Edited May 6, 2020 by ben2008 Quote
JimErn Posted May 6, 2020 Report Posted May 6, 2020 Ebony is black, consider that as a min-wax finish Sorry no help on the dye amazingkevin and ben2008 1 1 Quote
Rolf Posted May 6, 2020 Report Posted May 6, 2020 (edited) I like the alcohol dyes. Very fast dying and easy to adjust the density by thinning with alcohol. Very intense colors. I have also used the Minwax stains. But with them you need to buy a quart minimum for the color, pint for the Ebony. https://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/search?term=alcohol+dye I would get the small bottles a little goes a long way. The wood turners in our club turned me on to this stuff. I use it for some of my Christmas stuff. The red, Green and Orange are dyed on these Gnomes. ben2008 Posted May 6, 2020 Author Report Posted May 6, 2020 Thanks Rolf for the tips and the link. Really cute Gnomes. Very nice . I took a look at the link you provided. I actually remember that place Craft Supplies from years ago. I had a lathe for a while but found it too messy for my liking. No offence turners, just my opinion. Anyway, I'm going to give the small bottles of dye (as you suggested) a try. I ordered 4 different colors to start. I have some ideas in my head how to use them. Thanks again Ben This is one of the projects I'm working on right now. I always have 2 or 3 projects going at a time. Finished cutting and into shaping and sanding. Still a ways to go. amazingkevin 1 Quote
