Old Dust Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 This 76 year old fart has to realize that he cannot do what he used too. My wife and I regularly watch diy network and see many good ideas that we cannot afford. Nevertheless a project of putting tile on our sink back-splash sounded good and doable. Went to Home Depot, wife picked out a design she wanted and got all the other stuff needed. IE: tile nipper, grout, etc. The attendant in the kitchen section showed us something relatively new. Instead of putting tile cement on the wall first and set the tiles in that, then wait a day to dry before grouting, she showed us a double sided glue sheet that sticks on the wall and has a face to stick the tiles on. That would save a whole day and you could immediately grout and seal. Great. That becomes only a 3 hour job now for 7 sq ft of tile. Wrong! First take off the old molding, wash down the back-splash, now put on the sticky sheets. OK, all goes well. But by now my breathing is hard and I have to stop. Next day I cut and put up the tiles. Wife does the grouting. Good! But have to stop again. Day 3, seal tile and start to put up new molding to finish job. Nail gun does not work. Can't use hammer since trifocals show three nails and cannot hit any. Work on fixing nail gun. After a few hours nail gun works, but have to stop again. After rest and nap get back to molding. FINALLY WALLA! FINISHED! Perhaps the Scorby's Scotch on the counter added to the delay. John Old Dust Quote

Messman Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 Regardless the work and tiles look great, but then so does that Scotch Quote
Dan Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 You rock old man, er...John. Looks fantastic! And there's still enough Scotch left for another day of work. Dan Quote
toolbeltman Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 Nice job John...thanks for sharing your story Quote
Travis Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 I hear ya. My DIY projects take 3 times as long and cost 5 times as much as I would think. Good thing I'm not a contractor...I'd be broke. Quote
RetiredArmy Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 John, As a former inspector for flooring (carpet, tile, vinyl, laminate & wood), the backsplash looks great. You saved a TON of money by doing it yourself. Good Job! Michael Quote
