don in brooklin on Posted November 24, 2020 Report Posted November 24, 2020 (edited) I was having an issue with Inkscape when using the difference function as it was removing some detail in the base piece. I downloaded the new revision 1.01 and viola the everything works just fine. There are some other bug fixes. It is worth it to stay up to date. don watson Posted November 27, 2020 Report Posted November 27, 2020 (edited) After some recent HD problems I have downloaded Inkscape and have found the strangest thing ever. When I open Inkscape the page loads and sits AT AN ANGLE ON THE PAGE ??. When the Win 10 computer finishes updating I will get a pic. Win 10 has finished doing its thing and I start up Inkscape and lo and behold no problems. I think Imay have fried my brain Edited November 27, 2020 by don watson OOOOPS Fab4 1 Quote

don watson Posted November 27, 2020 Report Posted November 27, 2020 Yea, I thought all was well until I tried creating some drawings with aRED outline. I followed Don's method but I have this problem. One or two lines missing. How can I correct ?? Quote

I've had problems with the trace tool in the past, probably because of the jpg that I used. I did some adjustments to the trace settings but it only helped a little. don watson 1 Quote
don in brooklin on Posted November 27, 2020 Author Report Posted November 27, 2020 Did you trace a bit map and did that look okay on the screen? If not you may have to play with the settings. I have have had to do trial and error and sometimes I can not figure out what will work. Usaully upping the threshold sometimes helps. If it looks okay on the screen but print out or export of png messes it up. Try saving as a PDF and printing from there. Inkscape didn't communicate with my Brother printer but works fine with my Lexmark and my HP. don watson 1 Quote
don watson Posted November 27, 2020 Report Posted November 27, 2020 Thanks for the advice chaps, I will mull over what you said and return in the morning. Quote
don watson Posted November 28, 2020 Report Posted November 28, 2020 Thanks for the help everyone. I had a prolonged session at this today and am finally happy that I have solved my problem. I have uploaded the new image of the piece I posted yesterday and it is exactly what I want. I opened the .jpg .object in Gimp to get rid of any text and sized/scaled it to A4. I then saved as .png. I imported the .png file into Inkscape and went to Object>Ungroup and then Path>Trace Bitmap. I used the Edge Detection and set scans= 4 and colours= 4, hit OK and moved the trace off the page and deleted the original. Move the trace back to the page and Align in 2 directions, goto stroke and fill and select width of stroke = 0.75 mm and hold down Shift and click on the colour you want and the job's done. Save as the format you want. If anyone wants a detailed explanation I will try and help. Thanks again Brenda for your offer to do this on your Inkscape but I am glad I kept going and got the method right. take care and stay safe Don W Foxfold and Fab4 2 Quote
don in brooklin on Posted November 28, 2020 Author Report Posted November 28, 2020 Thanks for the explanation. I always find that the trace bitmap to be trial and error. I made a note of how you did this. Now are you going to cut it. don watson 1 Quote
Dan Posted November 29, 2020 Report Posted November 29, 2020 Awesome job Don. I hope you plan to cut it. I can't wait to see the finished project. don watson 1 Quote
don watson Posted November 29, 2020 Report Posted November 29, 2020 I probably will cut it but it will be a while as I have quite a few patterns now that need this conversion and I want to get them done while I remember how to do it. lol I have noticed when calling the Fill and Stroke, some patterns are ok with the stroke width set at 1mm and I think this makes for faster sawing but some patterns need 0.5 mm and the delicate lines mean delicate cuts in delicate places, if anyone understands this ?? However, very happy that I have nailed this and need to get on with some more work. Thanks again to you all. Quote

Hi Don: Write it down, step by step as you do it - because if you're like me, next month when you go to do it again there will be one step that you're missing and the learning curve starts all over again - Glad to hear that you stayed with it and WON Fab4 Quote
don watson Posted November 29, 2020 Report Posted November 29, 2020 Thanks Paul, I have done just that. I want to be able to take it to the 'Men's Shed' when we are back running again and use it as a teaching tool and I have started writing and saving and printing it out. It will join a long list of teaching aids I am getting ready for the startup. Quote

don watson Posted November 30, 2020 Report Posted November 30, 2020 (edited) Yes Paul, we have to remember "KEEP IT FUN" lol Can I now blame Dan and Don in Brooklyn for my latest brainstorm ? They both asked if I had copied/traced/saved as pdf and various little bits and pieces so I thought to myself I really should design/make these things myself using Inkscape and before I start check out the version of Inkscape 'so that anyone with the same version can expect the same results.' This is when I realised I have went way off topic here and Don had originally posted "that the new version is 1.01 and works well. So I will download the latest version (I use 0.92)and check it out before I produce what I hope will be a new method of making bowls/plates. take care and stay safe Don W PS Don, may I come back here and post the findings ?? don watson Posted December 1, 2020 Report Posted December 1, 2020 Well I have had a go at designing these bowls/plates and I find it quite easy and fairly quick to do. I will create another topic and release what I think there. take care and stay safe Don W Fab4 1 Quote
