don watson Posted December 1, 2020 Report Posted December 1, 2020 Hi All, I was interested in making bowls and plates from 6mm (1/4") plywood and have been looking at Inkscape as a design tool. So far I have found it fairly simple to create a pattern but getting it as a cuttable pattern is a bit more tricky but doable. I am writing a set of instructions as my memory is rapidly disappearing and if there is any interest I may make them available to members here, they will explain how to make your own patterns, it is a very slow process as life keeps getting in the way. Anyone with an interest may PM me and I will see how far I get at writing the instructions. Here is the first bowl I drew, I am refining the sizes so that it can be cut from a standard A4 or US Letter size sheet and I am working on the sheet size as well to get more for your money. take care and stay safe Don W Be_O_Be, Dan, Fab4 and 1 other 4 Quote
John B Posted December 2, 2020 Report Posted December 2, 2020 Looking good Don. I am rather keen on the collapsible bowls, I made a few years ago and have some (I think ) great ideas for them, however I can not find a program that allows you to draw odd shaped spirals and my geometry is about 50 years out of date Quote
don watson Posted December 2, 2020 Author Report Posted December 2, 2020 Can I just say these are not collapsible bowls rather the segments are all cut individually and stacked with a slight rotation and glued together. I am waiting on a piece of ply being delivered and will cut and see how this one turns out before I get too excited. Will post a pic when done. I will get to writing the instructions when I can. don in brooklin on Posted December 2, 2020 Report Posted December 2, 2020 I look forward to seeing the results. Awhile ago I did lot of bowls and baskets. Lots of fun. Never did figure out how to draw in Inkscape. One interesting site is http://www.scrollmania.com/ Polydraw will do a basket as you posted. http://www.scrollmania.com/Tutorials/Tutorial_IV.pdf Dave Van Ess is really helpful too. Be_O_Be 1 Quote
don watson Posted December 2, 2020 Author Report Posted December 2, 2020 Thanks for the information Don. I drew up a bowl and cut it today and am just waiting until after tea to glue up. I will attach some pics of what is done so far. I aim to start a set of instructions for this but life keeps getting in the way. Be_O_Be 1 Quote
don watson Posted December 3, 2020 Author Report Posted December 3, 2020 This is the bowl glued up. It is a bit heavier than I like at 1/4" ply, I prefer 5mm or 3/16" but I think it looks ok. I have written the instructions and have sent them for a trial and will now waiton the verdict. Thanks for looking. take care and stay safe Don W bobscroll, Fab4, meflick and 1 other 3 1 Quote
