Smitty54 Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 I was cutting a pattern the blade stopped cutting and I heard a ping. I thought something was wrong with the saw. Hooked the blade up without the wood, saw is ok. The blade was dull. Put a new blade on same cut same place, ping not cutting blade dull. The wood is 1 x 10 select pine from Menards. No indication of anything in it. No knots normal grain. I think there is something in it. Has anyone had this before? OCtoolguy 1 Quote
dgman Posted December 12, 2020 Report Posted December 12, 2020 Sounds to me like there is a piece of metal hiding in that board. I have a small hand held metal detector I use to check recycled wood for nails. Something you might consider buying. They are available at any woodworking store. In the mean time, axe that board! jollyred Posted December 13, 2020 Report Posted December 13, 2020 I have seen many trees in the woods with fence wire going through the middle of the wood. Sawmills will not take any wood that has been grown in town or near any fields. Their saw blades cost a lot more than scroll saw blades. Sometimes bullets are found in boards, but they are usually soft enough to not damage a blade. Tom OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Be_O_Be Posted December 13, 2020 Report Posted December 13, 2020 I have hit fence wire in store bought boards before, it gets expensive on table saw blades. I discovered this recently while ripping a board in half, my first one.... OCtoolguy, new2woodwrk and Jim McDonald 2 1 Quote
new2woodwrk Posted December 14, 2020 Report Posted December 14, 2020 I have found more than my share of metal pieces in boards from box stores as well as other places another thing I found recently were internal knots that were not visible on the surface of some pine I bought - really weird stuff I have since gotten into the habit of running my metal detector across all boards during my sanding process I got into this habit when I was using pallet wood all the time and it just stuck with me Be_O_Be and Smitty54 2 Quote
