LarryEA Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 I got a rice cooker and been fixing rice puddings and fried rice. Rice and eggs for breakfast. I'll tire out on rice but for now it is a good change. Also got a small hot air fryer and a small crock pot I got them because I live alone and trying to fix small portions Maybe even less clean up RabidAlien, John B, GrampaJim and 2 others 5 Quote
Foxfold Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 Good idea ! I have an air fryer and wouldn't live without it.. So much easier than a full oven. A crock pot is great. I tend to make more than I need and then freeze in individual portions so that I don't have to 'cook' every day. danny, Scrappile, RabidAlien and 1 other 4 Quote
new2woodwrk Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 (edited) We have a rice cooker and use it at least once a week sometimes more We do a lot of cooking and freezing ( now we don't freeze rice). There are only 2 of us, but when I cook I more often than not make extra for freezing (we have 2 full freezers in our garage. 1 for breads and 1 for store bought/cooked meals) that way we can throw some rice in the cooker and take out a portioned meal ready to eat. Saves lots of time and work Nice thing about a rice cooker is you can do more that cook rice and there are many different kinds of rice. We use Jasmine, Plain White, Bismati for various meals You can also experiment with how much liquid you add making the rice either drier or stickier. Stickier for fried rice and sushi We used water, chicken, vegetable and beef broth as liquids to give the rice flavor as well as adding spices during cooking to infuse the rice with incredible flavors Which rice cooker did you get because some come with strainers for reheating food or steaming vegies while cooking rice Edited January 25, 2021 by new2woodwrk teachnlearn 1 Quote

teachnlearn Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 Our family has used a rice cooker for at least 30 years. Most have a warm feature when it finishes. Ours has a button that pops up and stays warm. We pull the plug when it goes in to warming it tends to dry or burn the rice. If you don't find the steamer, crumple aluminum foil and put on the bottom. This works for a pot too. Keeps the food like veg off the bottom and above the water. Mess with the water measurement with a bit less or bit more, it will either cook the rice firmer or softer. Teaspoon of oil or butter will make the grains not stick together. Left over rice can be steamed or microwaved. Container, shot of water, lid sitting on top keeps steam in. Microwave around 3 min 'We have a 1500 watt microwave.' Just a start point. We make a full pot and microwave the rice and left over stir fry. For a single person, sounds backwards, make more of your food, then you have a batch to pull out for a complete meal with less work and cleanup. My wife and I survived living in dorm rooms, learned a whole group of tricks to survive single. RJF Quote
