Ceric ME Posted March 17, 2021 Report Posted March 17, 2021 Doing my first segmentation and having a hard time finding a good tutorial. I think I figured it out except... I have no good idea how to sand the round edge onto the fine pieces. I've tried to use the band sander on similar sized scrap wood. Besides being really dangerous did not work out. Getting that round edge that is common hand sanding I must be missing a technique. Any advice be appreciated. Quote

don in brooklin on Posted March 17, 2021 Report Posted March 17, 2021 I use the Dremel as Barb but I can sometimes use a mac mop (flap sander) depending on size and hardness of the wood. I also have a Flex Drum Sander. If real small, I hold with pliers or with rubber fingers. Dan, Ceric ME and amazingkevin 2 1 Quote

I do want one of the mops. Though right now the misses hasn't murder me in my sleep to stop me from buying odds and end for the scroll saw yet (some blades here, dust collection there, etc.) I know its coming if she sees another box. I'll try the dremel on some scraps see if I can make it work correctly. Thanks. amazingkevin 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted March 17, 2021 Report Posted March 17, 2021 Are you doing "segmentation" or "intarsia"? amazingkevin 1 Quote

I'm cutting it all from one piece of wood and then painting it. I believe that makes it segmentation. By my understanding Intersia would be if I would make the piece out of multiple pieces of wood cut separately then pieced together. Which this little project has proven I'm not ready for yet. jollyred Posted March 18, 2021 Report Posted March 18, 2021 I often use these sanders sold by Judy Gale Roberts. I also made some larger bow sanders that help a lot with the larger pieces. I will also use a sharp knife to chamfer the edges prior to sanding. This reduces the sanding time and the amount of sanding dust produced. Tom Ceric ME, amazingkevin and Tomanydogs 3 Quote
ben2008 Posted March 21, 2021 Report Posted March 21, 2021 This is what I use to hold very small pieces for sanding. Mini locking pliers They have serrated teeth so I placed a small adhesive backed rubber piece on the jaws so I don't mar the wood. They work great. Here is a link. I'm sure there are other places to get these mini pliers. https://www.micromark.com/Mini-Locking-Pliers-set-of-2?gclid=Cj0KCQjwutaCBhDfARIsAJHWnHuuVKt056sN41iN4averKlWZUii3scytHc15IpEX3mUrhSQxqKaslAaAu_4EALw_wcB Ceric ME 1 Quote
Ceric ME Posted March 21, 2021 Author Report Posted March 21, 2021 I like looking at Micromark for the niche things they have. There wonder cutter I wonder about. Quote
Pictures in wood Posted April 3, 2021 Report Posted April 3, 2021 To sand really small pieces, I put a dot of cyanoacrylate on the back of it and attach to a larger manageable piece of scrap wood! it will readily pop apart with a knife point when done sanding! Ceric ME 1 Quote
