Montserrat Posted March 24, 2021 Report Posted March 24, 2021 What is a good blade to cut fretwork into a musical record? and are there tips and tricks? I tried yesterday and the record broke. Guess my goto PEGAS MG #5 is not the way to go. Quote
kmmcrafts Posted March 25, 2021 Report Posted March 25, 2021 I've never cut a record or actually anything other than wood, LOL. I would think that a #5 blade would be quite aggressive for that thin of material etc.. Also wonder if the reverse teeth might not be a good idea but as I said.. I haven't tried.. I'm guessing that a skip tooth blade might be a better option? Hopefully someone with experience will chime in as I wouldn't mind knowing what blade would be good for these.. I would think maybe a small blade too.. like a #1 or thereabouts.. Quote
preprius Posted March 25, 2021 Report Posted March 25, 2021 would a diamond blade work? Maybe like a sanding wire. amazingkevin 1 Quote
John B Posted March 25, 2021 Report Posted March 25, 2021 A puzzle blade or a #1 should do the trick. It is something I have wanted to do for awhile. Even bought some 33 1/3 albums from a second hand shop to cut, but decided I liked them too much to destroy Now in my collection, Oh well perhaps I'll find a hip hop or Bach one soon amazingkevin 1 Quote
new2woodwrk Posted March 25, 2021 Report Posted March 25, 2021 Here are 2 threads about cutting vinyl, maybe of some help or others who do this type of cutting you can contact?.... https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/profile/30583-blights69/ Tomanydogs and kmmcrafts 2 Quote
Roberta Moreton Posted March 25, 2021 Report Posted March 25, 2021 I have cut them. I use a small blade, depending on the pattern. I use flat or spiral, again depending on the pattern. Don’t try to go quickly, it will break. Taping it to a piece of thin cardboard, like cereal box, helps to learn. Use painters tape, NOT packing tape. Packing tape sticks too much and, you guessed it, removing it can cause it to break! This is my first. John B, new2woodwrk, amazingkevin and 1 other 4 Quote
flarud Posted March 25, 2021 Report Posted March 25, 2021 When I cut mine I plan to sandwich the record between 2 pieces of 1/8" BBP. I will probably use my "go to" blade, a FD UR1. new2woodwrk and amazingkevin 2 Quote
new2woodwrk Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 You know, I so want to do this type of cutting Problem is, I revere my albums as biblical relics and just can't bring myself to cut one I have several hundred I just won't get rid of them John B, Rockytime and amazingkevin 2 1 Quote

The center where the label is, is very thick and I like to keep it whole. flarud, amazingkevin and John B 3 Quote

preprius Posted March 29, 2021 Report Posted March 29, 2021 For some reason a guy at work just sent this file to me. Just out of the blue. Electron beam microscope x1000 of groves on vinyl records. Jim McDonald, John B and amazingkevin 2 1 Quote
amazingkevin Posted March 29, 2021 Report Posted March 29, 2021 A blade that clears its self of wood is the best pick I think its a skip tooth!!! Quote
ike Posted April 1, 2021 Report Posted April 1, 2021 #3 blade running a slow speed and a slow feed. I have cut several records and the more I cut the less I like it. There is scveral video's on youtub watch them and go bly the best fitting for you. drunning dtoo fast and the vinal will melt and rejoin behind the blade. as I said before I don't enjoy cutting vinal that much ,but it is up to the person , It is cheeper than wood, and fretwork on vinal looks good but it's not for me.
