courtym74 Posted October 16, 2021 Report Posted October 16, 2021 For those who paint projects. Has anyone had any issues with birch plywood vs white spray paint? So far no matter what brand I use, for some reason white always makes the grain pop up horribly. I've never had this issue with any other color, just white. I don't know if there's something in it that only is in white but it's awful. Usually requires doing very light coats and sanding between each one just to knock the grain down. I've tried every brand from the cheapest junk on wal-marts bottom shelf to the most expensive Rustoleum I could find Krylon, etc. They all do the same thing. Meanwhile with black or grey or really any other color a quick sanding before and it can usually be a one coat job. (I do two just to be safe) Frickin white spray paint! crupiea 1 Quote

Dan Posted October 17, 2021 Report Posted October 17, 2021 Use a sanding sealer, let dry (dries very fast,}), sand, then paint. meflick, LarryEA and courtym74 3 Quote

I had to order it from Ace Hardware. I could not find any within 100 miles of my home. It cost $26 delivered for a quart. Gallons were available, but I used minimal amounts of making toys. Shellac-based products have a shelf life. You can buy flakes and mix shellac yourself. Just be sure to get dewaxed. SealCoat is clear dewaxed shellac. Quote
Foxfold Posted October 17, 2021 Report Posted October 17, 2021 I use Gorilla wood glue/water 50/50. It goes on white but dries clear and seals it nicely, then I can paint any colour I like with any paint I like. Sometimes Acrylic, sometimes house paint it works fine with any. courtym74 1 Quote
