I am looking for help again cant find a post or site that will give me tips.  Looked on Steve Good site can't find more information on burning wood.  I am getting some bees wax.

is there anything else I can do.  Does changing blades to a smaller size or bigger help.  I have not cut yet but drilling a hole made a serious burn

Hey Barbara, what type of wood are you using and how thick is it? If you are burning the wood when drilling it's probably dull drill bits. Small drill bits overheat faster than larger bits. You could try a larger drill bit. You will get a lot of feedback on blade sizes and brands. I suggest trying different blades on scrap from the same board and see what you feel most comfortable with.

Good luck and share your experience.

From Steve's site.

1. dull blades

2. use tape. The tape lubricates the blade.

3. feed rate. If you try to rush the cut, sawdust will pack around the blade causing friction heat and addition blade wear.

From me

1. If you can, get cobalt alloy drill bits. They last longer and take heat better than high speed steel.

2. slow the speed of the saw, if possible.

3. If the cut is long push and pull the blade in the cut to help clear saw dust..

4 If your material is thick, try using skip tooth blades.

5. Using beeswax is not really helpful as it wears off the blade quickly.

I just cut some 3/4 maple without burning it. First I covered the wood with blue tape, then I covered the blue tape with packing tape, then I put the pattern on.
I was still worried so I put blue tape and packing tape on the bottom too! No burning.

Roberta,

What were the; saw, blades, and speed?

Hey, that looks familiar!

When I cut mine, also 3/4" maple,  I just used my regular shelf liner under the pattern. Nothing on the back. Pegas #5 RTG skip.  No burning.

Be careful when easing the edges if you use a rotary tool.  High speed bits or sanding drums will burn the wood easily.   If you want to use a rotary tool, use a very low speed.

BTW, I do not run my saw at very high speeds.  On thin wood or ply I run a very low speeds or the small blades over heat and break toooo often.  For thicker wood, I increase the speed gradually until the blade is cutting easily with just very gentle pushing.  On my Pegas maybe at 1/3+/- full speed.

Thanks so much I will go back now and see what I must change to help.  I have no idea if we get blue tape hear.  I use masking tape and a tape for packing.

I will look at it all and try to get as close as I can to your advice.  Dan I will look into the bit it may be the problem and speed as well.  I also not sure of the tape.

Blue tape I never herd of and may have to put extra or other tape over pattern.  I am going back to find out.

Thanks all Barbara

Blue tape is painters tape, a better version of masking tape.  Should be able to find at any hardware type store.   Another alternative3 is to use self stick shelf liner.  If there is Walmart in your area it is the Duck Brand.  It  is clear vinyle like material and comes in rolls 12" and 18" wide.  IMHO, works better than tape of any kind. Only one layer needed. Then attach the paper pattern with a spray adheasive.

The last time I bought the shelf liner, I bought the Contact brand, that stuff is super sticky and nasty! I had a devil of a time getting the sticky residue off! I put the entire roll in the trash!

You might reconsider trying the Walmart Duck Brand.  It is a lot cheaper than using Blue Tape and Packing tape, easier to apply, is repositionable and comes off clean as long as you pre-sand to a nice smooth surface.

Thanks All and wichman From Barbara

I will try to change it.  Sorry that was silly of me.  That shop has a store near me. The other problem no one new what it was as I only new it as Blue tape. Now I no what to ask for.

To be exact, 3M blue painters tape. Comes in different widths. I keep 1" and 3" in my shop but try to use it sparingly. It gets expensive even here in the U.S. I can't imagine what it must cost in S.A.
