jbrowning Posted January 4, 2022 Report Posted January 4, 2022 (edited) Hello everyone. My brother is looking for a sign post that will be 6' tall. I'll be making it out of a 4"x4" cedar post and it will be one piece. But I'm wondering what would be the best base to put on it. Whatever it is will need to be able to be disassembled when they are roaming around the country. I will attach a drawing of what I think will work. But I'm just wanting to see what else can be used for the base. Thanks Jim Edited January 4, 2022 by jbrowning Quote
Jim McDonald Posted January 4, 2022 Report Posted January 4, 2022 Not wood, but get an antenna tripod and a joint of antenna mast. The tripod has holes in the feet for screws, but they are just as good with either long timber spikes driven into the ground. Quote
new2woodwrk Posted January 5, 2022 Report Posted January 5, 2022 (edited) So I am in the process of doing this for my mailbox. My problem is water rot even with treated lumber What I opted to do (suggested by a friend who knows his stuff which I obviously do not LOL... Dig the hole (I dug mine 2 1/2 feet) and place a cement form (round) in the hole and the post (mine is a 4x4 treated) in the cement form and fill the form with quickrete. I opted to use a PVC form rather than the coardboard ones. Prop up to maintain its position and when dried fill hole with dirt. I did this because it seems every 5 years or so I have to replace that darn mailbox post and I'm to old, cranky and tired of doing it! Edited January 5, 2022 by new2woodwrk Quote
