wombatie Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 This is the first time I have been here in a week and what a week. It started with my modem dieing. So I thought I would be cheeky and speak to my service provider and they were very nice and sent me a new modem free of charge for a 12 month contract. It arrived on Thursday and the back of my computer didn't have the right connection in the back for the new modem so off to the computer shop I went. Why don't you bring the computer in and we will install the proper connection for you for $30 and you will not have the problem again, ok that sounds fine, so off I go and get the computer drop it off and go back in 1 hour. I go back and they ask if the computer as been making a noise when I turn it on, yes I have but its just the fan, no its not they say its the hard drive dying. Then nice little man come from out the back to tell me it just died. I have just lost everything, the only thing I had backed up was my photos. See I'm not completely stupid only half stupid. So my free modem cost me a new computer and hours so far putting things back on. Oh the other sensible thing I did was print a copy of all the email address's so they are back on now. Now I'm starting on my favorites and this is not the time to have a seniors moment. LOL. Have I learnt a lesson, you bet ya, my son in law is getting me an external hard drive to back everything up on regularly. Marg Quote
Clayton717 Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 sorry to hear that Marge. My computer crashed a couple months ago, had a virus attack it. Luckkily I got everything back except my favorites, but I can't remember all of them. I have an external harddrive so I was safe there, all patterns and important things are updated to it once every couple weeks. Hopefully you can get everything back and saved again. Quote
Messman Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 Welcome to the club Marg. I had the same thing happen to me not to long ago. Quote
Oges Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 Sorry to hear about the computer Marg, hope you didnt lose too much Quote
Xray Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Pics are the worse to lose, everything else can pretty much be replaced, though its a pain. I have lost many things over the years to failed hard drives, the worse to lose are pics, passwords & links. Setup programs are a pain to lose too, is email. After about 6 hard drive failures, I finally installed another hd just for backup. They are both 1tb in size, so plenty of room. When my main one fries, I should be able to burn a copy of my drive, byte for byte, to a new one, and be back up within hours. Quote
WolfmoonCT Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 All my drives are in RAID. So even if one dies, I can replace it and it will start rebuilding the drive to match the other in the array. Quote
Travis Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Boo Hiss. I'm sorry to hear that. The external HD is a great idea. Good luck rebuilding. Quote
wombatie Posted September 27, 2011 Author Report Posted September 27, 2011 The computer is back at the shop the stupid thing won't let me install Office or my photo program it keeps tell me I don't have enough memory when I have more than my crashed computer had. Sometimes I hate technology. Marg Quote
