Help Wanted with Gollum!

I haven’t quite finished this portrait of Gollum from the Lord Of The Rings,(a Charles Dearing pattern). My backboard has a huge knot in it and I sanded the black off to try to make it look like a pool of water to go with his fish. I haven’t glued it up yet, as I can’t decide whether to leave the knot as is, or black it out. Opinions?

For me it doesn't look like water so I would paint it black. You did such a fantastic job on the cutting it needs nothing else.

Yes, the cutting is great and you don't want the back to distract from the main project. I say paint it.

No it certainly doesn't look like a fish so I would try to black it out but you may need to use another backer.
Great work on the cutting though.

Great job cutting a cool pattern. I like the idea of the pool but like a lot of my ideas I don't think many people will get it and it may take away from it. You could cut the outline of the pond out of the backer and then put blue glass behind it.  But as Dan said, the cutting stands on it's own.

I will say that the picture I posted didn’t quite show the same perspective as I see in person. By the way, when Dearing cut his frameless version of this he did it 29”x 20 1/4,”much larger than I did. This is only 10 1/2” x 6 1/2” plus surrounding “frame”. I am leaning towards blacking it out, but I like the glass idea. I’ll play with it a little.

I haven’t glued it yet. I feel quite sure that the existing backer is totally salvageable either way.

I rewrote the script. Took the puddle out.  A bit of touch up and he’ll be finished.

If you do another version the blue lake looks good.  Might enhance the fish by water color for trout patterns. 

But golem is good as it is.  He is a colorless character.
