Brenda, If you mean the tools they are usually called gouges 😀 Take care when learning to use them.

Thanks Don, I knew they had a name but it wouldn't come to mind. I have the 'idiot guide to woodturning' and carbide cutters. But it's something I'd like to try.

Good luck Brenda. I hope to get a chance to learn a little turning soon. Hubby offered to give me my first lesson this past weekend, but unfortunately I developed some ringing in one ear so we didn’t get out to the shop. He will be working over next weekend, which is our Memorial Day holiday so he won’t get that holiday off either so it will be a few weeks before we might get a chance for him to show me some basics. In the interim, I have been learning how to hand carve and got some new carving. Tools for my birthday do I will try to spend some more time on carving.

I've tried hand carving in the past, however, my hands are so bad I don't have the strength to grip any longer.  So must confess to buying myself one of these along with some carving burrs. It's easier on my hands. 🙈

I got a small lathe last year along with some of the new 'cutters', if that's the right word ?  Not been brave enough to try it yet though, but I will.  This group will be a tremendous place for me to come and watch the experts.

I’m sure you already know but there are a lot of great videos on YouTube for beginners. One of my favorites for a beginner is Tim Yoder.

Awesome.  I'll check out his videos.  I've been woodturning for years, but far from an expert.  I usually dust off the lathe a few times a year.  Looks like he has a lot of great projects.

This one is clever.  He did it with a reciprocating saw.  I think a scroll saw would work much better.  Kinda blend two different disciplines, which I like the idea of.

Thank you so much for that info. I'm off to look at his videos.  I've never turned a thing in my life but sure would like to know how. xx

I would recommend looking for a local wood turning club in your area.

Mmm, I may try but here in Yorkshire woodworking is still  deemed a 'mans world' 🥴

I think if you join you might be surprised how welcomed you are.  Our club used to have about 1% female and now we have close to 10% and growing.  The guys would welcome your skills and knowledge.  You probably will start a trend.

There is one reasonably close, I'm looking into it. Here's hoping. x However, I have zero knowledge 🙈

The women that joined our club had zero knowledge. That is the reason for joining, to gain knowledge. The ones at out club that are exceptional turners are happy to help those that need it. I am learning things all the time when I go. They have one day a month where any club member can bring in whatever they want to work on and at least two of the pro’s are there to help and guide anybody that wants it. I think you will be surprised how welcome they will make you feel.
