Loskoppie Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 Hi all just finished cutting my first hard wood. Steve Good pattern combined the two into one. Lots to clean up and sand. Not the same as soft wood I know but nice to do. Barbara Dan, danny, jollyred and 6 others 9 Quote
Frank Pellow Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 I very seldom cut soft wood with my scrollsaw. In fact, I can't remember the last time that I did so. I do remember that I decided long ago that I had much better results with hardwood. It seems that I learned that conclusion of that lesson even though I can't remember the details. Loskoppie 1 Quote
preprius Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 Well done Barbara, I like how the cats ears were traced / cut. Kinda looks like the dog is playing with the cats tail. One of my 3 cats actually barely tolerates me. Only likes petting on specific spot on the couch. Hates being picked up. Does not like cowboy boots. I think it is smell or noise. Not sure. Anyway what type of wood? Blade size? What did you observe on cutting hardwood? How many times did you change blades? What needs to be sanded? Me. Mark Eason Loskoppie 1 Quote
Dak0ta52 Posted March 25, 2022 Report Posted March 25, 2022 My wife is a member of a dog training club and I've cut a few of these to donate for auctions or sales the club sponsors. Well, except for two. One is on our front door and the other is sitting in a pile of scrap. I cut everything except for the small letters and broke the "G" in "DOGS." I keep saying I'm going to cut a piece to fix it and add a backer to glue it to but like I said, it's sitting in my scrap pile. Great work on your cuts. I really like the hardwood piece. But then, I'm a sucker for pretty grain. Quote

I thought a little more about this and now I remember that I have cut softwood. It's the Cedar and Blue Pine that I have used in a few Intarsia pieces. But, I have avoided larger pieces of softwood because, in my experience, warping is a bigger likelihood with softwood. Loskoppie, don watson and danny 3 Quote
don watson Posted March 26, 2022 Report Posted March 26, 2022 Agree with Frank, softwood cups too much to be used safely in Intarsia so I reckon it would be just as bad in this example. Nice job you made of that piece. Quote
Loskoppie Posted March 26, 2022 Author Report Posted March 26, 2022 Thanks for the great input does give me a idea of what other people feel about things. the wood is rose pink teak and the middle of the board is warped a bit not too much. As for the cat and dog it reminds me of my two babies. They are little more than a year old and they play together which in my book is not very often seen. I must admit the blades were a mix of twisted 5 not good idea and 5 and 3. The 3 was for the lettering and the blades are repacked and marked with the shops name. I found hard wood very different not sure if easer as you have to go slower and soft wood reminds me of trying to cut butter with a hot knife. I am so glad I have done it as it took me more time to get on and do it as i don't offen get such great wood VERY expensive Thanks all Barbara danny 1 Quote
