Badgerboy Posted August 20, 2022 Report Posted August 20, 2022 My daughter asked me to make a couple of corn hole boards for her impending wedding day. She intends to have guests sign the back side as a sort of guest book. After staining I applied these vinyl applicae she made on her cricket. Now comes the finish which is intended to be poly. I am concerned about the poly adherence to the vinyl. Does anyone have any experience or wisdom with this process? Thank you. Quote
Sycamore67 Posted August 20, 2022 Report Posted August 20, 2022 Like many other finishing issues, it is best to do some tests. Try different finishing on test pieces with a decal. Quote
new2woodwrk Posted August 21, 2022 Report Posted August 21, 2022 I have lots of experience with Poly but not with covering vinyl. IMO as @Sycamore67 suggests, test on a few pieces of similar wood and vinyl and texture Quote
Badgerboy Posted August 21, 2022 Author Report Posted August 21, 2022 Well after a good deal of reading it seems poly or even varnish over vinyl is not a problem. The consensus is to spray to eliminate brushing issues with all the edges from the lettering. Quote
Eplfan2011 Posted August 21, 2022 Report Posted August 21, 2022 I make my wife the occasional yard sign with the cricut, I usually throw on a few coats of waterborne poly. Quote
Roberta Moreton Posted August 21, 2022 Report Posted August 21, 2022 When putting poly over colored pieces I always use water based. Regular poly will tint the colors with a yellow effect. I learned this in my decorative painting days. I even painted “throw rugs” on the floor. Never had a problem, and many people wiped their feet on them. John B 1 Quote
