Sycamore67 Posted January 31, 2023 Report Posted January 31, 2023 With the winter ice and cold, they use salt on the streets. When I park in my garage the salty water drips off, pools and eventually evaporates. This leaves interesting salt dendrites. RabidAlien, Dan, LarryEA and 6 others 9 Quote
Joe W. Posted January 31, 2023 Report Posted January 31, 2023 Nice to look at. Reminds me of when we had the driveway and walkway redone in concrete. The contractor was strongly of the opinion to not use salt on concrete. He said it would erode the thin coat of concrete floated to the top of the driveway/walkway. Quote
Sycamore67 Posted February 1, 2023 Author Report Posted February 1, 2023 I have been using some salt on the driveway and sidewalk for 40 years with no damage. I do not use a lot but if I have glaze ice, I use salt. I use pet safe salt in area where my dog might walk. Quote
Gene Howe Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 Living in S. AZ, we have no use for salt on our roads and sidewalks. That's a good thing. I have high blood pressure and on a salt free diet. When we lived up north in the mountains, the county didn't use salt on the paved roads. They used cinders. Didn't melt anything but, they made it less slippery. Quote
Sycamore67 Posted February 1, 2023 Author Report Posted February 1, 2023 Cinders or sand can be used in place of salt. But, it tends to clog storm sewers and drains. It is also less effective than salt on heavy snow. Gene Howe 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 they put a chemical down on our roads, now instead of pea gravel and salt. I do not know what the chemical is, but in must create potholes that can never be repaired! Gene Howe and danny 2 Quote

Gene Howe Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 I love Arizona for it's natural wonders and warm weather. And, sandy beaches? We've got the sand but, no water Unfortunately, politically we're becoming californicated. Quote
