Last summer I had my barn taken down,  it was about ready to fall in on itself.  I salvaged some wood before winter set in. Today I took 1 of the 16 foot rough cut 2X4 's and started cleaning it up.

To my surprise this looks like hard maple! So my thinking is this wood is in the neighborhood of 100 years old. I always wanted to build a hammered dulicmer,  now I have the wood, win/win!

Beautiful wood. Look forward to seeing your dulcimer and what else you make with it. My husband’s family bought old dairy farm land when he was just a baby to build their house on. At least one of the old barns was there and was torn down to build their house. That was about 55 years ago. They kept the wood. He has built various things with it over the past years. We are pretty sure it is over 100 years old. I think it is white oak or maple. (I forget 🤔🤫) The most recent project was a watch box my son wanted for Christmas

Is there a difference between a hammered dulcimer and a sober dulcimer? Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Hoping you post pictures.

That's a good one...I'll try to remember that for the dulicmer fest this summer

Depends on who built them and what they were drinking at the time.  Another interment I would like to try to build.  Been really in the mood lately to do another strum stick and another cigar box uke.. that and my son has been hounding me to do it.
