Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day !

Over the last year, my issues have worsened and I walk with a cane.  it showed here last night around 3" and was mostly lake snow.  I stopped at Starbucks and was pretty disgusted with the amount of water on the floor inside and the lack of any shoveling outside.  I parked in a handicapped spot and it was slick walking into the store. I came out with another guy and we commented on the snow not being shoveled.  He went to his truck, got a shovel and cleaned things up.  A big thank you to him and a great act of kindness.

In this time where we see such an increase in crime and hateful news and internet postings, this act was great.  I have also had many people hold door for me and I am grateful.

One problem that a lot of businesses run into is that they lease their buildings and are not responsible (and some leases, they are forbidden from doing anything) for anything outside of their door's threshold.  The property manager handles that, and $tarbucks could be held legally responsible for someone slipping on sand the following day, or someone complains about a scratch on their car door, or trips over the concrete parking barrier.  Seen it happen, back when I slaved in retail.  They are, however, liable for the slick floors inside.

But I also see businesses that look at the conditions, make a judgement call and let the landlords know "screw this, I'm sanding/shoveling the walk" or using pushbrooms to try to get rid of large puddles, etc.  There's a point at which basic humanity should overcome the wording in a contract.

I have to admit, that I could be kinder and at times I am a grumpy old man.  I am trying to be better and looking for a chance to provide a random act of kindness.

I’m sure most of us can find times to be kinder and caring. We never know what unseen burden or issue someone may be trying to deal with. All we can ask and try to do is like you, try to do better and look for and act when opportunities present themselves. Kudos to you for being aware and making a genuine effort.

My experience is the vast majority are kind, respectful and help full.  Maybe because I am old, but I have had a lot of kindness lately.  Turn on the news quit watching news 24/7 and you might notice kindness more.

Amen!
