Inkscape family name sign help

A few year ago I watched on youtube some videos on how to make a family name sign. It had the last name and then the first name of each family member was cut into the last name. I had a request to make another one of these signs and I can't seem to find this video to help me design it anywhere. If anyone has any tutorials on this I would appreciate any help! I believe you had to offset the font and then you were able to union it or something along that line. I attached a picture to help show what I am looking for.

If anyone has a video or step by step instructions of how to go about creating this pattern I would love to hear from you. It's been six years since I created this pattern and I just don't remember how I did it!

It is using an old version of Inkscape but I think it should be good.
