jimmyG Posted April 8, 2024 Report Posted April 8, 2024 I'm beginning to wonder if any of the patterns in these fancy books are ever cut by the designer. I cut 2 of the four sides first to check the pattern out. Am I missing something, am I that stupid? How is this supposed to fit??? OCtoolguy 1 Quote
rjweb Posted April 8, 2024 Report Posted April 8, 2024 Sometimes the thickness of the wood you have to adjust the pattern, thats what it looks like is happening here, RJ Roberta Moreton, OCtoolguy and barb.j.enders 2 1 Quote
jimmyG Posted April 8, 2024 Author Report Posted April 8, 2024 Don't know what the wood thickness the pencil holder was supposed to be. This was 3/8" Quote
Wichman Posted April 8, 2024 Report Posted April 8, 2024 Jimmy, Which book? Which pattern? Most of my pattern books will list the thickness of the wood to be used with a particular pattern. With all my patterns in which thickness matters, such as this one, I will lay the wood to be cut, on edge, with the cutout. I will check to see if my 5/16" (or any other thickness) is the same as the pattern. Some times I have to cut on the line, sometimes on the inside of the line, and sometimes on the outside of the line, to get the proper fit. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted April 8, 2024 Report Posted April 8, 2024 yes this is all about wood thickness. Need to justify when cutting. danny and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
Scrappile Posted April 8, 2024 Report Posted April 8, 2024 100% in my opinion,, I would say this pattern was designed for 1/2" stock. You are using 3/4". adjust the depth of the cuts accordingly and you will be fine.. Nothing lost here, an easy fix. I have been there several times. OCtoolguy and barb.j.enders 2 Quote

Jimmy stated he was using 3/8" material, the pattern looks like it was designed for 5/16". Jimmy if you look at the upper right hand part of the first picture you should see and L shaped cutout. Measure the horizontal line, that is the thickness of material it was designed for. And yes, you can adjust the depth of that line for the material you are using. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

BadBob Posted April 9, 2024 Report Posted April 9, 2024 (edited) Some pattern creators do not test-cut their patterns. I know this because I asked. I have found this to be true of many plans sold for toys as well. Most of these are a bit of a stretch to call them a plan because they only provide the pattern with zero instructions about making the toy.
