Popular Post Allen levine Posted February 5 Popular Post Report Posted February 5 Ok so I got a bit ambitious and I'm learning that just because I like a project doesn't mean I'll do a great job im using cherry for top layer sapele for middle layer and cherry ply for bottom layer i will make a sapele simple frame if and when I finish and it's worth framing I used a Flying Dutchman 2/0 blade but I snapped 2 of them so I gave a Dutchman 1 blade a shot and it was near impossible for me as it's like a piece of hair and I snapped one so I moved on to a Flying Dutchman 3 blade and didn't snap any this is where I'm at its not a disaster but I had a lot of blade drift even after I changed up tensions and got different pings I'm pretty new to this stuff but I'll keep going i startted cutting the middle board a bit cold out there so my time is limited in the shop barb.j.enders, meflick, ChelCass and 7 others 10 Quote
Dan Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 Looks like it coming along fine. Everyone has blade drift to some extent. It's not noticeable so nothing to worry about. As for it being too cold out, you need a glass of wine next to your scroll saw. Just keep it covered so no sawdust gets in it. TAIrving, Allen levine and barb.j.enders 1 2 Quote
Scrappile Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Sorta makes me thirsty. Looks to me like you did good. You could have easily probably use a #3 or larger blade for those. Allen levine 1 Quote
TAIrving Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Very nice work and nice choice of woods. #2/0 blades are notorious for snapping when we apply tension. There was quite a discussion about this a year or so ago. The consensus was to ease off on the tension just a little bit. I do it by putting in a little bit of slack when I clamp the blade. That gives the reduced tension when I set it. #1 blades do the same, just not quite so much as the 2/0 blades. Quote
barb.j.enders Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Looking good. I don't remember the last time I use that small a blade. I tend to stick to #3 or #5's. Occasionally I will use a #1. Generally they are MG blades. Dan 1 Quote
Gonzo Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Looks good if you ask me. I don’t think I’ve ever used anything smaller than a #3 Quote
Allen levine Posted February 6 Author Report Posted February 6 thanx for replies, Im not 100 percent sure but somewhere I believe I read mr good stated most of his work should be cut with a number 2/0, but maybe I read that somewhere else...dont recall, but thats why I purchased some. the price of blades in bulk is easy enough to handle. its always a learning curve. gotta try everything and figure out what works best for me. now that I have flydutchman 3 Ill order some pegas 3 just to compare Quote
Wichman Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 A few questions; what style blades are you using, are you using the quick clamp in the Hegner, what size blade clamps are you using ( .5, .7, or 1.0 ), and, where are the blades breaking, i.e. top middle or bottom, or just random. Your profile indicates that you are using a Hegner, as do I. I use 2/0 blades occasionally. My blade of preference is the FD Polar #1. Your cutting looks good, practice, practice, practice. Quote
Scrappile Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 In a detailed fretwork piece, in wood 1/4" or less I use the small blades #2's or less. For thicker wood and not a lot of fine detail, I use #3 maybe larger. I have never used larger than. #5, unless I am doing some 3D cutting. What I am saying is that is what I am comfortable with. Others will have what they are comfortable with. Dan and Wichman 2 Quote

We'll thanx for letting me know there are different size clamps the blades popped while cutting sometimes I'm guessing when I was turning and creating some force on the blade Number 3 blade worked fine Quote
Wichman Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 The .5 clamps work better with the smaller blades, less breakage. If the blades are breaking at the bottom, it's probably a lower clamp issue, if they are breaking in the middle then it's likely a technique or overheating problem, if they are breaking at the top then it is likely a top clamp ( either regular or quick clamp ) issue, if the breakage is random then it's likely the blade type or size . Wichman Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 If you need more control over the blade wandering, then consider using the shorter stroke on the Hegner. Quote
Allen levine Posted February 6 Author Report Posted February 6 I just took frame out of clamps so Ned to sand of course but I have to trim right side a bit and put a spacer in so border on left and right side are closer to equal will take out each layer and use tung oil for finish weird I measured each border so somewhere my math was wrong Scrappile, JackJones, Dan and 2 others 5 Quote
