Help with pattern?

I am not proficient at making patterns, though I do go on the fly sometimes. I have a musician friend that is quite a character and would love to make a portrait from this picture. Any suggestions as to where to get help? Thanks for any help!

Here's a pattern for you. You can use as much or as little of the detail as you are comfortable with .

Show me the finished piece if you cut this one.

i sure wouldn't want to be cutting that one. It'd take a year just for the drill holes.
