JimNC Posted April 23 Report Posted April 23 I have read many of the postings on this site regarding wood dyes. I would like to try a few colors on pine but I’m not sure what type/brands are best. I want to buy a few of the basic colors (red, blue, etc.) to try. Some of the dyes I looked at seem to be expensive so I don’t want to buy a bunch of stuff that I can’t use. I have done that too many times already on other projects. Quote
preprius Posted April 23 Report Posted April 23 (edited) I did some tiniting in a couple of different ways. If it is for toys for younger kids I used food coloring. Birthday cake coloring for pink. I actually had to soak the piece of wood overnight to get the color deeper. The pic of feet drawers used this method. Myrtle was the wood I used. On a different project , I tried "rit" dye powder mixed in the water based finish. but liquid is better. Baltic birch was used. I also used transtint for other projects. I told myself not to use alcohol again, as it evaporates too fast. The coloring particles flows with the fluid. While brushing the alcohol flows onto the plywood fast. This leaves colored flow marks. I used blue transtint on plywood for mobile tool stand. One side I used the alcohol method and brushed it on. The other side I put transtint in water based finish then brushed it on. The tint was better easier to play with when in thicker liquid. Transtint does not do well with oil based finishes like "Arm r seal". With alcohol brush method I had to rebrush many times to even out the fluid marks. Intarsia pieces... For purple heart I used very little purple transtint in the water based finish. JimNC Posted April 24 Author Report Posted April 24 I am thinking about the Keda Dye Color Kit and mixing with water. Is that a good choice? Also I stated pine wood but I will be using it on other wood too. Quote
