Tom Gi Posted November 20, 2025 Report Posted November 20, 2025 I made a trivet .75 cherry wood can I finish it with tried and true or boiled linseed oil without it catching on fire or anything else bad when using it on a hot stove or putting hot pans on it. Yhanks OCtoolguy 1 Quote
TAIrving Posted November 20, 2025 Report Posted November 20, 2025 Not sure how BLO will do. I like to finish my trivets with chopping board oil, like this Amazon.com: John Boos Block All-Natural Board Cream for Butcher Blocks and Cutting Boards, 5 oz - Wood Conditioner & Sealer for Maintenance and Protection, Safe Formula with Beeswax & Mineral Oil : Health & Household. There are many other brands of similar stuff. It consists of beeswax and mineral oil. The mineral oil evaporates off, leaving the beeswax. When the trivet gets hot, the beeswax melts and absorbs into the wood. Scrappile and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
Denny Knappen Posted November 20, 2025 Report Posted November 20, 2025 I first dip in diluted Shellac to get the solution into all the frets. Then Butcher Block Oil. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Dan Posted November 20, 2025 Report Posted November 20, 2025 (edited) I use a wooded trivet I made 20 years ago. We use it almost everyday. It was finished with blo/mineral spirit and have had no issues. It looks well used, which I like, but my SLW wants me to make a new one. Wichman Posted November 20, 2025 Report Posted November 20, 2025 Once the finish had cured completely the char temp is the same as the wood it's on, between 400 and 600 degrees, depending on the type of wood. Unless you are consistently exceeding those temps you should be good. Quote
