Compound Acorn Birdhouse

Inspired by a Wood turner that showed an acorn birdhouse I thought I could do that.

 

Version ! - I glued a piece of walnut to a piece of ash.  Cut and it was close but there is a 1/6 inch of the top showing on the bottom. Not good enough for me as I think the pattern not lined up to the wood.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Version 2.  I glued a piece of cherry and poplar. This time I cut the pattern between the top and bottom and was careful to make sure lined up square.  Not happy here as the difference was even more.  I think I must of not cut exactly on the line or the blade bent.  Not happy yet.

FINAL VERSION. I am happy with result.

i cut the pattern between the top and bottom and glued separately cut each separately.  Because I was concerned about not being able to clamp I put in dowel.

They all look great.  And you should know that the general public won't realize the "error"!

It's all about what matters to you, but IMHO, I like the look of the first 2 better.  The joint between the 2 woods is more pronounced & obvious on the third one.  On the first 2 it looks more seamless, even though they don't line up "perfectly".

Not a criticism, just one man's opinion.

Hi Don, great job on all 3 of them.  That nice looking bird inthe third photo would be very happy calling that home.

LOL>Had a smile about repetition.  I am addicted to compound cutting and especially mini bird houses. Probably made over 150.

I am getting organized for my compound cutting courses this fall and was laying out blanks and those partially done.  Just need to finish some.

Here is my version cut two pieces and used Titebond3 glue, not as good as Don but he is very “FUSSY” LOL

Well done. It came out perfectly.

I can't see anything wrong with this at all.  I have another glued up and not going to use dowel.
