Clayton717 Posted July 8, 2013 Report Posted July 8, 2013 here is my latest pen. It is made from oak from a Jim Beam barrel. The band around the pen is the metal band off a bottle of Jim Beam (around the neck). Travis 1 Quote
Travis Posted July 8, 2013 Report Posted July 8, 2013 Did you just CA glue that on? Or did you embed it in resin? Clayton717 1 Quote
Dan Posted July 8, 2013 Report Posted July 8, 2013 Neat idea Clayton. I'll drink to that! Clayton717 1 Quote

keefie Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 thats a great looking pen. like Roly, I too use CA / BLO finish on my pens, but your finish puts mine to shame. I also like the stand you made for it, it that your own design? Keefie. Quote

Do you wipe it on then go over it with CA? Quote
keefie Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Thanks, yes the stand is my design. Just something I cut from some scraps. I never used BLO on pens. Do you wipe it on then go over it with CA? I keep folding a piece of paper kitchen towel in half till it's about 1" wide, then put a little dab of blo on it then a line of CA glue about 1/2" long then with lathe on about 2000 rpm I rub it firmly along one section of the pen. it goes on with a bright shine, then goes a little dull almost foggy to look at then it shines up again. you must keep the paper towel moving side to side along the length of the pen section till it shines up. Cut off the used section of towel and repeat for the second section of pen (if you have pen in two sections.) I usually give it between 6 to 8 coats like this, then I have several 6mm dowels mounted in a block of wood, I put the pen sections on these and leave them overnight before assembling the pens next day. ( it's not necessary to leave them overmight, just my personal preference as I believe it lets the coating fully cure before touching it.) hope that helps. Keith. Clayton717 Posted July 10, 2013 Author Report Posted July 10, 2013 Thanks Keith, I will have to try it. I now use strips of craft foam to applty ca glue. The glue don't soak in like it does on paper towels and seems to givee a smoother finish Travis 1 Quote

Clayton717 Posted July 22, 2013 Author Report Posted July 22, 2013 Kevin the first lathe I had was from PSI as well, now I have a Jet. I know a few guys that have a lathe from harbor freight , they say they work good but I have never used one myself. Quote
keefie Posted July 22, 2013 Report Posted July 22, 2013 I only make the slimline pens, but I get my kits from Timberbits.com in Auatrailia. Over $80au and the postage is free. My pen kits worked out at £0.89 each with no postage costs instead of £2.49 each with a £4.99 postage charge if I bought them from a U.K. supplier. I don't know if they sell the type of pen kits you want, but it would certainly be worth a look. Keefie. Quote
