Popular Post Bishop Posted July 9, 2013 Popular Post Report Posted July 9, 2013 Tried something a little different, I guess you could call it a 3D intarsia. We cut the fish as a left and right hand intarsia and then glued them together and shaped them. Homer & Carol Dave Monk, JimErn, Clayton717 and 12 others 15 Quote

keefie Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 that is gorgeous, very nice work, but I think your sunfish is different to the ones we get off out coast in the summer months. See the link to a description of them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_sunfish Keith. Quote

trailfndr Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Absolutely awesome work. I love the idea of making it a stand alone piece that looks great from all sides. May have to try that if I do the right pattern for it. Quote

Bishop Posted July 10, 2013 Author Report Posted July 10, 2013 Thanks everyone for the kind words, this is just something we wanted to give a try. Were still trying to think of a subject for our next attempt. Keith I think we will rename this piece as FUNFISH as it really was a lot of fun. Kevin sorry we don't have a Gallery as of yet, don't seem like we have time for everything!!!!! Thanks again everyone Homer & Carol Quote
keefie Posted July 10, 2013 Report Posted July 10, 2013 (edited) I assumed there were a couple of differend types of "Sunfish" and I certainly wasn't trying to take anything away from the fantastic work you have done in producing the sunfish, it was just my curiosity as I had only heard of the ocean sunfish. But you have made a wonderful job in making your fish and there is no need to rename it. I would love to try something like that sometime - maybe when I get a LOT more courage to attempt it. Just one silly question, How did you get all the scales on the body of the fish? Keith. Edited July 10, 2013 by keefie Quote
Bishop Posted July 10, 2013 Author Report Posted July 10, 2013 Keith We did not take exception to the comment but I must admit I've never seen a fish like that before. The scales are done using a small hammer on the harder woods and by hand on the softer woods. The tool is made from a 3/16" brass tube and sanded at an angle. Homer & Carol Quote
Huntter2022 Posted July 10, 2013 Report Posted July 10, 2013 Nice tip on making the scales , Keith I never heard of a ocean sunfish , so it was a learning experance for me as well great job on the fish maybe one day I'll get that good Quote
spirithorse Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Great work!Another intarsian using the user name Doc Ragiarn or something similar to that also used that technique but, in one example, he made one side of horse and then made the other side of the horse with the legs in different positions and glued them together making a totally realistic statue of a horse that looked like it had to be completely carved!I keep wanting to try that concept but, never have the time and ambition. Once again, great work you have done! Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse Quote
keefie Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Great way of making the scales, it looks like a "brass pen tube" set in a handle. - I think you might have hit it too hard when you put the scales on the head, you seem to have decappitated it I definately must attempt something like that soon. Keefie. Quote
Bishop Posted July 11, 2013 Author Report Posted July 11, 2013 Spirithorse, funny you should mention doing the sides different as we have a Tiger on the drawing board that we are trying to do that very thing with. Not sure how long that project will take but will keep everyone posted. Keith we did hit the head pretty hard and it fell off LOL But its amazing what you can do with a tube of glue!!! If anyone would like to try this fish as a challenge project let us know and when we get the pattern done we will start a challenge thread. God Bless Homer & Carol marmoh 1 Quote
