Belive it or not, Christmas is right around the corner. Scrollers are starting to think about gifts and patterns to cut for loved ones. But since the Holiday season is also about helping others in need, we thought we'd do something new this year. This year, SSV is to put together an e-Book full of Christmas ornaments. These ornaments will be exclusive to this eBook and designed by our talented SSV members. Folks are can download the ebook in exchange for a donation to a charity. My hopes is that we'd be able to raise some money for very worthy causes, and provide some cool patterns at the same time. So I'll need some volunteers to design some ornaments. [*:2dlmi55f]Each designer will provide 5 patterns (no more, no less) [*:2dlmi55f]I ask that the designs are not made available anywhere else (this gives value to the e-book) [*:2dlmi55f]Designs must be emailed to Travis by November 1st (info below) A few things to keep in mind: [*:2dlmi55f]Religious and secular designs are accepted. [*:2dlmi55f]Other religions also celebrate this time of year. Lets not neglect them. [*:2dlmi55f]Keep detail and size appropriate for an ornament. What do you get in exchange? [*:2dlmi55f]Credit for your design. [*:2dlmi55f]The warm fuzzy feeling that you're helping others in need. Submitting your ornaments: [*:2dlmi55f]Email the ornaments directly to Travis (travis [at] scrollsawvillage.com) [*:2dlmi55f]Formats accepted are JPG, PNG. Please keep this in black & White (no gray) only. That way I can convert them easier when putting together the ebook. [*:2dlmi55f]I'll also accept Inkscape files (SVG). This is ideal if you know how to use Inkscape. That way there is no conversion. I'm designing. Are you? So who's in?

For baltic birch plywood, I use a clear acrylic spray. For any solid wood, I use lemon oil first. Then when it dries, I use acrylic spray.

This doesn't have a disk sander, but I'm really happy with my oscillating spindle/belt sander. I got it from Home Depot. It got a lot of recommendations from furniture-makers. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1 ... ogId=10053

That's awesome! You really made yourself a great workspace! Now you got me thinking of putting together a workspace too. I especially like the scrap bin and beverage holder. Nice job!

Very clever way of modding existing patterns. This is what makes scrolling exciting! You can easily adapt patterns to meet your own needs. Great job!

Wearing gloves on a scroll saw wouldn't pose much of a problem, but I'd take them off when working with the drill press or any other spinning object like spindle sanders, table saws, band saws, lathes, jointers, etc. Its really easy for the glove to catch and can really mangle a hand quickly. Even worse if you're using something with blades. While I'm on the subject, its also a good idea to roll up sleeves and be careful of loose clothing. Now that the PSA is over, that bowl turned out beautiful. I love the colors. I can't wait to see some more! Nicely done!

When I graduated Highschool, I sent the President an invite to the graduation ceremony and got a similar letter. I'm a little bummed that he didn't stop by for a BBQ, but I guess he had some important stuff to do. Still pretty neat either way. I still have it.

That's really cool! I went to your website and it looks like you only have a tiny picture. But from what I can see, you did a great job. It's neat that you got the reply too. Frame it and put it next to your artwork. Nicely done!

For tiny pieces, you might want to consider shaping them into geometric shapes on the sander and donating them to a preschool or kindergarden. Not only can they use the pieces to build and stack which helps fine motor skills, but they can even learn how to sort based on color or grain. If nothing else, the kids would be thrilled to use them in some art projects.

I really fell in love with that city. I look forward to seeing your treadle saw. I'd love to get my hands on an old Barnes Velocipede treadle scroll saw. But they're pretty rare.
