Hi Will. Welcome to the Village. We're glad you found us. If you run into any problems with the tutorials, please let us know. There are lots of folks here who know GIMP pretty well and more than willing to help you out. Anyway, welcome aboard. Jump on in and have some fun!
  10. You can mock up what a cutting would look like if cut. Open up the pattern in GIMP and select the white and delete it. Then below your pattern layer, find a wood picture and put it below it. It will look like the pattern is cut from wood. Its a little crude, but it works well enough. If you keep the pic small enough, you really can't pull a pattern from it. The anti-copy script is pretty easy to get around. I suppose you can add it for extra security. But if anybody knows enough about computers, they can get around it with no hassle at all.
  11. Hi Scott. Welcome to the Village. We're glad you found us. You'll be surprised about what you can do with such a simple tool. The rabbit hole runs deep...LOL. Anyway, welcome aboard. Jump in and have some fun!
  12. I've had to remove a number of patterns from a member who has been grabbing images from copyrighted sources and claiming them as their own. Remember that copyright infringement is a serious offense. The copyright owner has the right to press charges and file lawsuits against the offender. If you are basing your pattern on someone else's photos or artwork, make sure the image is in the Public Domain or licensed under Creative Commons. If you have permission to use the images, make sure you're prepared to prove it when asked. We really take copyrights seriously at SSV. We want to protect the rights of every artist, no matter the medium. Sometimes these are posted in ignorance of copyright laws. In those cases, we quietly remove the patterns and send the pattern designer an email explaining why it violates copyrights. But when it becomes an blatant offense, your account will be closed, your patterns deleted and you'll be banned permanently. Here's a few resources that might be worth looking at. [*:1fezvmjj]Understanding Copyrights [*:1fezvmjj]SSV User Guidelines [*:1fezvmjj]SSV Privacy Policy If you have any questions regarding copyrights, please ask. There are a lot of folks on SSV that are very familiar with copyrights and how they work. We really want to make sure that you have access to quality and legitimate patterns. Thank you for your time.
  13. No problem. I keep an eye on all of the Village University forum threads. So if you get stuck on a particular lesson, feel free to ask there. That way if someone else is having the same issue, its easy to find.
  14. Our Christmas Contest has come to a close and I randomly drew the winning entry. Drum roll please... And The Winner Is...Firedkm! Congratulations, Dale! His entry was the 3 layer puzzle. He created a great Works In Progress thread where he documented the entire process. The end product turned out great. Give it a try for that puzzle-lover in your life. Dale will be receiving a Rose Jewelry Box Intarsia Kit courtesy of Midlothian Woodworks, a $40 value! Everything you need is included in the kit. Including pre-cut/mitered box sides, all of the different wood species conveniently labeled, pattern and instructions. These kits are perfect for new and seasoned intarsia artists alike. These kits would make an awesome gift for that special someone in your life. Be sure to check out their full line of intarsia kits. If you decide to purchase one of these kits, be sure to thank Mike for sponsoring the contest on SSV. Without him, this contest wouldn't be possible.
  15. Hi Mac. Welcome to the Village. We're glad you found us. I would love to see some of your intarsia. You can set up a User Gallery (you can find a [tut]tutorial here[/tut]) and show off a little. I get a real kick out of seeing other's work. I think you'll have a great time here. Lots of talented and friendly folks to talk to. Anyway, welcome aboard. There's lots of stuff to look at and do. Jump in and have some fun!
  16. This is the last evening to get your entries in for the Christmas Contest (at least until I get up in the morning and draw a winner). You must post a picture in the Christmas Contest thread to be considered. Otherwise, I don't know if you want to be entered. There has been a ton of really great cuttings lately in the gallery and the Bragging Rights forum that are certainly eligible. But if it isn't in the Christmas Contest thread, you're not entered. As it stands now, your odds are pretty good. So get those entries in before its too late!
  17. I was thinking a SSV 2010 Calender would be pretty cool. We have so many wonderful pictures of projects in the User Galleries, I think it would make an awesome calender. Would anybody be interested in such a thing? It would be professionally printed photo calender (I'm still looking at a printer). The cheapest I can find costs about $15 each to have them printed. If there's interest, I can put it into motion.
  18. Lets pick a day in the week for it to be the official time. That way I can add it to the schedule for those interested.
  19. This is the last day to get your pictures of your cuttings in or post your WIP threads. Post your Christmas projects here and be sure to post a link to any WIP threads for an additional entry. I'll be drawing the winner tomorrow. Good luck, everybody!

Hi Joe. Welcome to the Village. We're glad you found us. Scrolling is a great hobby. You'll be amazed what a simple tool can do. For you puzzle pattern, try gluing your pattern on some cardboard. Cardboard from a cereal box works great. Trim the cardboard to the size of your picture. Then with Packing tape, tape the edges to your cutting. Here's a video that Steve Good demonstrates how to do this. He uses 1/8" ply instead of cardboard. You can try either one and see what works best for you. Hope this helps! Enjoy the site. Jump in and have some fun.
  21. I'd like one with a drill press attached so I can drill my entry holes without moving to a different machine. I'd like to say that's a new idea, but it's about 125 years old. Too bad nobody thought it was good enough to incorporate into modern saws. Barnes Velocipede Scroll Saw No. 2 made in 1885
  22. Last day to sign up! Then let the fun times roll!
  23. This long weekend is a great weekend to make some headway on your scroll sawn Christmas gifts. Remember, we'll do the drawing for the intarsia jewlry box on Dec. 1st. Be sure to get your entries in!
  24. Hi Charlie. Welcome to the Village. We're glad you found us. We have a number of folks from the UK here. In fact, I believe there is a live chat for folks in the UK and surrounding areas. You should stop by sometime. Anyway, welcome aboard. There's lots to look at. Jump in and have some fun!
  25. 3 days left to sign up for Secret Santa! I encourage everybody to sign up. This is a great excuse to use up some of that scrap wood you have laying around. It doesn't have to be big or expensive. And if you use some scrap wood, its free (other than postage)! Postage is $4.95 for a small flat-rate USPS box. It might even be cheaper if you ship First-Class. Who doesn't like scroll sawn gifts? Join the fun!
