Hey Vector,have you ever cut anything in that work area??not even a spec of sw dust. LOL ,just kidding It looks like a sterile environment compared to my basement digs.Good advise on all the tools.John aka qlty

All the filler I've made with saw dust and glue hasn't taken stain very well it always resists the stain and does not result in a good finish match of the wood.Is there a special glue out there to use for better results?If not whats a good wood filler on the market and how do you use it?Perhaps pre staining the filler before applying It ??

A big item at HD and other bldg supply stores is pre finished flooring and the solid wood type comes in many fine woods the sheets run around 4 Ft by 6 or 8 inches wide.My Hd was even giving free sample pieces out to take home to match a rooms decor.Can't beat the price on those.Did I mention I'm a bit frugal?John aka qlty

I have used a lot of wood wine boxes that a local liquor stores throws out,if the wood has French,Italian,or Spanish.writing or images on one side I leave it on the back of the project for a cool look.I have used mahogany wood from an old dresser,oak and maple from old torn up flooring,cedar from an old fence for different cuttings.Did I mention I'm a bit frugal?? I put painters blue eazy remove masking tape on 1st then I spray back of pattern fairly heavy let dry to tacky this keeps it from lifting then clear packing tape last.John aka qlty

My way of useing lemon oil is to fill an old jelly jar half full of it ,cut the handle off a cheap chip brush to fit in the jar so lid can be closed.This way no mess or clean up.I find that a brush on of the oil is enough to bring out grain in most woods instead of soaking,also drying time is faster.Glueing to oil is a tough one,perhaps after oil dries real good and a clear arcrilic is applied to the back gluing might be more efective??John aka qlty

I have a hp printer that lets me chose print quality and have found that useing {fast draft} and[ black ink only] is good enough for a pattern in most cases.The printer prints really fast and saves ink.

For me its a toss up between band saw and scroll saw and that is subject to change as more tools are added.Just picked up an electric plane great for shaping a pice of fire wood into a blank for scrolling.

I found that putting the saw on a mat only isolates vibrations to the saw itself.Bolting it to plywood and then clamping the plywood to a bench seems like the best,If you can hang or set a heavy weight like a cement block to the bench might further reduce vibrations.JMHO

Cherry,oak and maple needs no stain soak with lemon oil to bring out the grain, let dry real good and seal with clear arcylic spray.

At the show you could display a statment telling what you have finished it with as well as to the type of wood its made from.My daughter does pottery and she discribes this as well as stating if its food safe and micro waveable

I have used it on pine,maple,cherry,and mahogany.it does bring out the grain and has some darkning effect you need to try it on a scrap piece to judge for your self.I put the oil in an empty jelly jar and cut the stem off a brush so the lid can be closed.I give a liberal coat with the brush slopping it on and hang to dry.I found with wood like cherry I had to let it dry for a week or so otherwise it will bleed thru any clear finish.Acrylic has less of an odor so in cold weather the piece can be brought indoors after spraying.

Can anyone tell me what mail order Co sells the recepter sleves to hold a pen or pencil to use on a desk set or sign that I might cut.I imagine they would screw into the unit or attach with threaded rod and nut.TIA for any help.John aka qlty

I gave up waiting for a used DeWalt so I bought a used Sears 20 inch Craftsman contractor series Vspeed for $100.It weighs a ton had to take it off the stand to get it down my basement.Runs nice and smooth has had little use so I'm a happy scroller.Sear used to sell quality tools.

I have an old (yard sale)press that you put a pistol drill in which I did and use that for making starter holes for my scroll work.Am I Frugal??

I took the guts out of an old 40 inch TV wood console,put a 3/4 inch pice of plywood on the top at a 30 dregre angle (back side up).I use a padded lab type swivel stool with a back rest.Lemon oil and acrylic clear spray works for me after oil dries. -
I get the best finish on cherry (needs no stain)mahogany cuts like no other wood I have ever used also gives a great finish.

This time of the year with the holidays liquor stores sell lots of wine,much of it comes into the country in wood boxes that they throw out.Most of it is 1/4 &1/2 inch thick and many different types of pine much having a nice grain to it.I have made good use of it scrolling plaques and word art.Its kind of neat when a piece has french writing on the back of it.They are starting to call me a dumpster diver around town but I never complain about the price of it.
