Yes, It's a kit they designed to repair the older saws.. The older ones like mine have no set screw to adjust the cam tension so when they got worn a little bit they just sell you a new cam and you have to push the roll pin out and remove the whole thing just to change the cam.. some of them I believe you had to change the whole front nose piece.. anyway.. this kit is an awesome upgrade for those older saws that have no set screw adjustment.. Here is a link to the kit.. http://stores.bushtonhawkstore.com/upper-blade-holder-bracket-conversion-kit/ This is a nice thing about Hawk and I guess? Hegner.. they support parts for saws that are 35 years old..

Okay, I took some photos of my saw.. to show the different upper arm styles.. Sadly for the old saw with the round bottom blade holders.. the original style upper piece was a broken mess by the time I punched out the roll pin etc so I have not photo of the OEM to that saw.. which is the one I upgraded to the new style.. Okay this photo is from my 1998 Ultra 226 saw.. This is probably the style you have on your saw.. What roll pin is worn? the one closer to the tension lever or the one right at the nose of the saw? IF it is the one closer to the tension lever and it worn out into the arm of the saw.. I don't think you'd be able to repair it without drilling it out bigger and using a larger roll pin.. I'm assuming the worn one is the one at the front of the saw which is why you intended to buy the upgraded nose.?? This photo is of my old 220VS with the upgraded tension cam assembly which changes the whole system to the new style like the newest BM series saws use.. NOTE: there is no roll pin on the front.. you can change the upper holder assembly by pulling up and out of the slot much like the lower clamps come out of the saw.. In theory if you had a slot all the way through to the end of the front of the saw table you could pre-load blades and swap out whole blade holder assemblies top and bottom with this style set up.. Not that I'd want to do it like that.. but .. Just a different view angle of the upgrade kit on the old saw... Different photo view of the Ultra style .... I wanted to show this photo to show how your cam lever should be adjusted.. Info will be at the next photo on this.. This is a photo of the 220VS with the upgraded tension system.. This is kind of a bottom angle view.. NOTE: the set screw at the back ( near the tension lever ) of the nose piece.. This is to adjust the cam tension.. You want this adjusted so there is resistance on the lever without any saw blade in the saw.. you flip the lever over like you tension a blade and you should meet this resistance just a little distance from where the handle meets the arm.. If this is out of adjustment it can let the tension fluctuate during the up / down stroke of the saw.. and some cases it can pop the lever up while it's running.. NOTE the above photo where it shows my tension lever resistance position with no blade in the saw..

Okay, so I've seen some questionable post here and there.. a couple times I was going to report it but I couldn't figure out how to report it.. I just came here to ask how to and then while reading the topic I found it. I've clicked on all the things at the bottom of a posting next to the Quote button but couldn't find it.. Now I see it at the top right of the post.. it's kinda grayed out until the mouse is hovered over it.. Now I Know.. and hopefully now that I pointed that out.. maybe someone else will benefit by knowing where it's at.. Thanks Travis and Clayton for keeping the site cleaned up..

What tips/tricks have you learned this year?
kmmcrafts replied to Fedido's topic in General Scroll Sawing
That one is been on my list to make.. I seen a laser cut design on etsy back around March.. and I've been wanting to make a pattern to cut them.. I think they'll be a hit as ornaments as a gag gift but also to remember the pandemic of 2020.. Cutting the letters small enough to fit into an ornament has been my issue with trying to design a pattern.. I like to give my ornaments out in a gift box and the box size is around 5 x 3-3/4 so the ornament with that much text is quite small letters to cut.. I may have to make the roll and change up the wording.. Maybe I just need to set up my laser, LOL.. rather keep scroll stuff on my main website as its predominantly hand made.. am doing another site for CNC / Laser stuff.. -
I think you'll like cutting on this saw.. read the manual good.. many people think that knob at the back is for adjusting tension.. but it's not.. read the book and adjust as they say in the book... These are really nice saws for doing angle cuts.. Boy they didn't mess around with getting this shipped to you did they.. Where did you order it from? Enjoy making sawdust with your new toy

I'm glad you posted a first topic... hope it's not your last one as we like people to be active on posting topics.. it's what keeps this site interesting and draws in more people to post more topics which keeps it interesting, Hahaha As for the upgraded kit.. It will fit your saw.. the upgrade kit is to upgrade the old saws but works well through the years.. I believe the kit was made for upgrading the newer Ultra line of saws..to the newest latest style.. but the kit works on the older Hawks with the round barrel style lower blade holders too.. as they guided me 2 years ago when Ii upgraded mine.. Sounds like if you have the little square style lower blade holders then your saw is a Ultra..

What tips/tricks have you learned this year?
kmmcrafts replied to Fedido's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I learned that it takes a pandemic to realize just how important toilet paper really is.. I learned that I do enjoy cutting those animal puzzles.. I'm hoping to learn that the guts of a original made EX-21 will work in a China made EX-21 soon. -
I was going to suggest the same thing but when I looked on the site he doesn't offer the upgraded one for the older saws.. only replacement parts..
-
I'm just guessing here.. but I suspect the reason they cannot ship to you.. is maybe you are not in the USA? Because of the Covid19 a lot of places are not shipping products outside of the USA.. I would try to give them a call and see what they say.. If you can post a photo of what roll pin etc. you are talking about.. I or someone might be able to help with a solution.. Does this saw have the round barrel style bottom blade holder? I suspect it does and I also suspect that the upper blade chuck that I think you are talking about is non adjustable.. so the whole assembly would need changed.. If this is the case then the upgrade to the new style whole assembly is probably the best option but does cost slightly more.. but it's a much better design... and adjustable... and you then can buy the wear parts individually.. I did this upgrade on my old 220VS..

They are good saws Ike.. BUT, that said.. they moved production of the EX-21 to China and the NEW 2017 and newer are made in China.. there have been lots of issues with the "NEW" China made saws.. I have one and it has had some issues... however.. the issues I've had was mostly minor.. BUT then again.. I'm mechanically inclined and do my own diagnostics and repairs so something minor to me might be a major issue to someone else.. Ray at Seyco doesn't support the new 2017 and newer saws.. But.. He claims the parts are interchangeable but he also won't guarantee they'll fit.. I'm getting ready to do a complete rebuild on mine.. so I should be able to testify this soon.. I ordered the parts from Ray and have them now.. I just need to take a half day off to do the repairs.. I'll try to at least grab several photos of the rebuild if I don't get video of it.. I have about 400 hours use on my saw.. and the two main issues I had with it was.. 1) The upper blade chuck kept giving me fits.. I believe it was defective but it could have been just user error too.. Upgrading to the Pegas blade chucks made it a much better saw... 2nd issue was the back knob at the back of the saw kept turning on it's own.. and loosing tension of the blade just doing small amount of one cutout.. Many have shown a rubber band wrapped around it to hold it in position proved to work well for them.. But I opted to take it apart and put blue loc-tite on the threads.. which about 200 hours run time and still working well for me.. I've had the dreaded bearing issues that you get with the DeWalts.. Not sure if it's because of the 400 hours run time or bad quality bearings or grease.. The one bearing I believe had no grease at all as it had rusted to the bearing pin / sleeve.. I freed it up and greased all the bearings last year but sadly it really needed new bearings.. There are no sources for parts or service with the China made saw.. But it is basically the same saw as the others so I'm chancing that the $300 in parts I just bought for it ( all new insides ) from Ray that is made for the original EX will work in my China made one... as I said.. we'll find out in a few weeks.. when I take the time to rebuild it.. wish me luck...

I think most here know where I stand on buying American made products and not only American but also small ( especially local ) business's ... Even if that means waiting 3 months for a scroll saw to be made, LOL Many things I use there is no other source than China.. I'm not knocking China made products.. they do have some things of very nice quality and price.. I just look for American made because I'm supporting some American family somewhere.. Which could be a farmer in Bushton KS.. or someone that works at Next Wave in OH... Now with the Tariffs on import products.. The prices of cheaper imports have gone up.. many things are priced very close to a USA made product.. you just have to seek out the right product for you.. be it a import or not.. just remember who you're feeding..

I also used the four part video from Gwinnett when I did my DeWalt years ago. I couldn’t find any on the ex-21 when I did that one last fall. But I made out okay with it just taking my time and laying the parts out in order. I will be taking the Ex-21 apart again soon to replace the whole guts of the machine. I might try to put a video together of the process.

Enjoy the new saw.. and hoping the Delta isn't too long in the shop.. be interesting to hear how you like the EX-21..

Few New Toys ( Tools ) Came In The Mail Today
kmmcrafts replied to kmmcrafts's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I haven't read the instructions yet.. but I've already had the saw apart last year.. I didn't bend any wrench or have a crows foot.. but I did remove the motor and everything to get better access to things.. I'm hoping to do a video or at least a slide show to put up on youtube provided I can come up with some sort of camera stand or something.. Maybe I need to look for a phone older that can mount to my tripod.. It'll be a few weeks out before I get to take on the rebuild task.. -
Well, I've been on this debate for a long time and finally broke down ( literally saw broke ) and ordered a bunch of stuff, LOL First off, My EX-21 started having fits again.. last fall it did the same ordeal and I took it all apart.. cleaned up the bearings etc, and greased with good synthetic grease.. When I took it apart the bearings was pretty bad.. however there was no source for the sleeve inserts so I just greased and put it back together.. Made it about 100 hours more before the thing got really loud again and has picked up a pretty bad vibration.. Actually surprised it made it that long.. couple of the bearings was dried of any grease and actually had rusted.. took a lot of work to clean it and free it up, LOL.. So a few weeks ago I talked to Ray at Seyco about the parts.. since I have the made in China saw that he doesn't support parts for.. We concluded that the parts are the same but he mentioned that he doesn't guarantee fitment of the parts because he's not sure of the tolerances of the China made saw.. but since I'd be replacing everything he said it all should work well.. the issue is when you only replace portions of the parts they may not fit etc.. So I finally ordered all new parts everything will be replace short of the electronics to the better made parts.. nearly $300 in parts.. I contemplated buying a new saw.. but if I go to a new saw it'll be a Pegas and I'd need to add another $500 to the funds to do that.. so for now I'm just renewing the saw I have.. I decided to wait on the Pegas to see what they're going to come up with for a new bigger table etc.. and maybe I'll pick up a new one this fall / winter.. I also been wanting to add dust collection to my saws.. I've been thinking this through for at least 2 years, LOL ( as you can see I'm not much of a impulse purchaser LOL ) .. I've studied many of the homemade systems.. and also the Seyco.. My original plan was to build a PVC manifold and buy a Festool or Fein.. But also I like tools and ready made systems.. I have 6 saws but only really use 4 of them.. A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a Metro Vac and bought the parts ( hose and cyclone separator ) Vac came in a week or so ago but waiting on the other goodies to show up.. Since I have so many saws I need more than one system so I also ordered a Seyco dust system too.. I'll be adding that one to the EX-21 as it's kinda made and set up for that type saw.. the other I'll be adding to one of the Hawk saws.. as time permits.. since I'm going to be making that set up from pieces and parts rather than a kit It could be a while before I get too it as I've been really quite busy.. Hence my reasoning to just pick up the Seyco system for the EX-21.. so I can have at least one saw hooked up.. As much cutting as I've been doing the dust floating around is getting kinda crazy.. I'm hoping to get around to making a scroll saw room where it'll be heated before winter comes so I'm not wanting to fool around a whole lot with building a dust collection.. SO.. Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll get a minute to rebuild the entire EX-21 and hook up the seyco dust collector. Maybe the other dust system pieces and parts will show up and I'll have time to get it hooked up to the Hawk before I start building my sawing room..

The last I had seen was that they had the larger tables made.. but was waiting on boarders to open up so they could ship them.. but because of Covid the shipping had been slowed up.. These tables are supposed to be available as a separate option and will fit the EX and other same style saws.. I heard this back in the first part of March, LOL Have not heard anything since then.. I may have to send him a message and see if I can find anything out.. I wouldn't mind a larger table for my EX if the price isn't too steep.. Also heard they was working on a dust collection at the saw design.. but never heard if they came up with something for that yet.. I'm thinking the dust collection would have to be quite inexpensive or people will just make their own system.. ? Then again.. a lot of people also make their own larger table.. soo.. maybe they'd sell decent..

I also have a Excalibur.. and also prefer to run the Hawk's over the Excalibur.. But I do use the Excalibur for certain projects and it also cuts slightly more aggressive or faster.. so on orders that I'm rushed on.. then many times I use the Excalibur to knock them out.. Mostly during the holiday sales rush.. After about 400 hours on the EX- it's time for new bearings etc... I put about that many on the old Hawk before I realized you're supposed to put a drop of oil on the pivot points and that back wedge, LOL.. still not really any wear on the thing,
-
Put about 60 hours on my old 1993 Hawk the last 2 weeks.. That old saw kicks butt.. Just installed the hour meter on it that I bought for it over a year ago.. I quit using it and moved over to the newer Hawks for the last year because I was having blade breakage on it.. I finally investigated a couple weeks ago and found the front tension cam was out of adjustment.. Couple turns on the set screw to adjust it and no more issues.. After using it the last few weeks.. I'm not sure if I like it better than the newer ones, LOL They are all great.. and yes Made In The USA..
-
Honestly there's not much difference in cutting experience between it and the Ultra.. Other than you can adjust the blade movement and I did make it so it's slightly more aggressive than the Ultra.. but it's not worth going out to buy one just for that reason.. The older Hawks have a "soft start" where they sort of ramp up to speed and the BM as soon as you hit the foot switch it's on and full speed.. I like the soft start better.. but it's not a hate it type thing and I have gotten used to it now some.. I guess if I was going to buy another saw I would buy a used Ultra and save the extra cash for something else.. IF I was a top feeder that would be a bonus for the BM.. but I'm not.. Just not much difference and there is plenty of deals on used Ultras that'd save money.. Glad I have it and don't regret getting it.. just not all the hype I thought it might be.. Would be nice if they'd have thrown in some extra lower blade clamps.. I like to pre-load all my clamps and got used to doing that with the other saws.. I need to bite the bullet and buy a few of them..
-
My 1998 226 Ultra is 10290 I think... My old 220VS is like 355** or something like that.. and has the round clamps.. Not sure the number of the BM-26.. I haven't memorized it because I haven't needed any parts.. or had to call and ask about the year etc.. LOL..
-
That's a good question from Rolf.. because I really get this when I put packing tape on top of the pattern.. however it isn't piled on the top, it gets piled between the tape and the pattern.. why I do not cover my patterns with anything unless it's a necessity..
-
I'm guessing it's one of these.. https://www.amazon.com/Wooden-Thick-Maker-Multifunction-Woodworking/dp/B085TLQYW2.. Almost got one a few years ago when I was making jewelry...
-
Yes they do.. I think they base the numbers on the model of saw.. I sort of wonder what kind of order they do those in.. I have the old round barrel clamp style saw with quite a high number.. and I've seen some not too far off from the number mine is that are Ultras.. My saw is a 1993 220VS but just a few numbers more they turn into Ultras.. The oldest Ultra I've seen so far is a 1996 My 226 Ultra is a 1998 the sales receipt that was in the box when i got the saw shows it was purchased in Dec. of 1998 I bought it for $400 still in the box unassembled in 2016-17ish.. I gave $100 for my old 220VS but it needed some parts.. I put another $150 or so into it as it needed a new tension cam.. I upgraded to the new style.. then bought a upgraded flex air hose and some new barrel clamps .. great saw now.. Put a lot of hours on it.. and just replaced the bearings in the pitman arm the other day.. They've sure paid for themselves..
-
Yeah it is older than I thought it was.. Only a year newer than my 226 Ultra..
-
You could buy me one and I'll tell you how good it works, Not really, lol I doubt I'd use something like that.. I'd like a drum sander.. but I'm talking about the open end deal so I could sand a whole board that would be wider than my planer..
