  1. Hello Kevin, I'm not a geek but we got an email from my IT section just today mentioning windows 10 and how windows 11 are waiting around the corner till windows 10 is set up properly, so I wont be upgrading my personal laptop till 11 is ready to go ahead. I am minded to follow AK [he's probably a very nice guy] and his signature of 'ifs its not busted then don't mess it up](or something similar) Bob
  2. Hi Ben, I'm in Ireland but I have a sister living near Calgary so I can relate to the temperature issues. I'm very interested in way your DeWalt saw is angled. Do you use it at that angle. My first thoughts were the angle would interfere with securing the lower bracket on the blade. Does anyone else subscribe to using the saw at an angle like this. I can see lots to like about sitting in front of this saw. Bob
  3. Thanks Don for your suggestions but that not them either. I will make one up and post the photos then we can all agree on a title to call them for future reference. Claire put together the board you sent me and there are a huge selection of driftwood craft ideas that she pinned that I haven't seen on the current driftwood pages so thanks for that. Bob
  4. Sorry AK, I didn't explain things well. What I want to do is make the actual figures, not silhouettes. A chunky tree limb for the body with thinner limbs as arms and legs. Arms and legs nailed to the body are no problem but I'm having difficulty fixing head to neck to body without giving the impression that its Frankenstein I've created. I was hoping to see a few photos to give me some solution. I was hoping someone could come up with a definition or a name of these figures that I could type into Google just to see photos and find out how to attach the head without nails being too obvious. What I have done up to now is use the neck piece of wood and insert it into holes drilled into the head and the body [sort of like a dumbell] but I'm having difficulty making these joints strong enough that the head does not fall off [which it has done!]
  5. I'm looking for photos or patterns of tree climbing figures so I can make some out of driftwood branches using my scroll saw and my band saw. I cant find what I'm looking for so far. I've googled 'wooden tree climbing figures', 'wooden stick figures climbing trees' or similar combinations of words but I've yet to see exactly what I'm looking for. Anyone know what name these figures are known by? Bob
  6. Thanks Travis, I have your email address at the top of my panic list. Bob
  7. Thanks Bob, just downloaded 653 pages in pdf in under 2 minutes. great tip. Now can anyone call over and go through it with me page by page? You'll only be required for the big words. Bob
  8. Morning to you all. I watched several of the GIMP tutorials by Travis and cant wait to start producing portraits. I've downloaded GIMP 2.8 and then tried downloading the user manual. GIMP works perfectly but I cant get the manual to work. What shows when I open the manual folder are the following folders; [i tried taking a screen shot but failed] 32, bin, etc, lib, libexec, python, share, uninst. When I click on any of these folders I get lots of files but none of them start a programme. I've downloaded the user manual twice but still cant get the manual working. Any ideas? Bob
  9. . Paul, just one extra thing to bear in mind is what finish you intend to use. Your glue and then your cellulose might react with your french polish or your laquer and you'll end up with something that you did not plan on.
  10. Did try sticking the pattern directly to wood before, but found that if you cut 40 or 60 holes in your wood then you are left with lots of tiny tiny islands of pattern that needs to be peeled off. I prefer to use the masking tape. And as has been said here before, look in skips and charity shops. An old chest of drawers could yield up lots of panels of handy sized pieces of good wood.
  11. Hello Paul, only my second day as a member and here I am giving 'expert' advice. In Ireland we have the same problem you have in that 'good' wood is either very hard or very expensive to come across. I had the same problem as you with bits pulling off all the cheap stuff I use, but I have stopped that by peeling the tape carefully backwards, as opposed to pulling it upwards off the wood. Sand the wood before you put tape on can help also. Bob
  12. First time to post photo's anywhere. First one was a birthday present for my daughter Michelle, second one is for my other daughter who is getting married. Next up is my shop from both ends. This includes my sawdust,my full waste bin,
  13. Just a quick hello from Balbriggan, which is near near Dublin. Started scrolling 3 years ago after seeing Steve Good's site. Could not believe how much fun can be had at this hobby. I have started delving into using driftwood, pallets, vinyl records, on top of wood of all types. I have two low end scroll saws and I hope to have purchased an Excalibur in a few weeks time to replace them. Been lurking here for a while and eventually decided that you lot aren't that bad so HELLO there Bob
