  1. Got this free pattern from Sue Mey designs and decided to cut it out today. It's 1/4" black walnut on a 1/2" cherry backer board. I haven't glued them together yet, Will have a clear gloss lacquer finish. I've added some pictures of the finished plaque.
  2. I agree with the thickness suggestion, try for a minimum of 1/4". They are notorious for tear out on the bottom, so a sacrificial 1/8" sheet on the bottom on the stack is a good idea.I use mine when I have a project with a lot of veining. I saw an add somewhere for spiral blades with flat ends, whicih I thinnk might help them survive a little longer.
  3. The pattern was ordered from Scrolleronline.com Or if you prefer the Wooden Teddy Bear also carries it.
  4. Suggestion: Get yourself a little mini LED flashlight, and fashion a bracket to hold it to the upper movable section of the plunge router attachment. At least that's what I plan to do. Will try to remember pics when I get there.
  5. Nice job, I like the design!
  6. I saw a picture of something similar on the web a couple days ago, and with our next craft fair the weekend before Mothers Day, I got inspired. I found a font I liked, printed out a couple of sayings, and moved the letters around till I got them where I wanted them, made several copy patterns, and started cutting. These are from recycled cedar fence boards. More will be made from various scraps I have around the shop. I know I have some maple. oak and walnut scraps of the right size. Thanks for looking.
  7. The cross was delivered yesterday, and thankfully the recipient loved it!!
  8. Add my vote for a great job! The frame really brings it out.
  9. Just tried it out, and my 8220 12v variable speed dremel, set at about 8k rpm, makes short work of 1/2" maple with out hardly slowing down. The action on the plunge router attachment is smooth and precise. I'm very pleased with it. For the cost of the seyco unit I have a tool that will be useful for many varied tasks.
  10. I'm getting a variable speed dremel so I can slow it down for drilling. Thanks for all the input folks.
  11. What was funny was the day after I received them, my son was tweaking his brand new 788 (bladetrackiing) and managed to drop one of the set screws, "Wait a minute." sez I," try this one I just received." Sure enough, it fit! Shortly afterwards he found the one he dropped, but now we know they'll work for both!
  12. Got mine yesterday Ron, many thanks.
  13. Fantastic Work! Thanks for sharing!
  14. Got the plunger router adaptor, but of course my decades old dremel doesn't work in it, so will have to get a new dremel. But that's okay, even though it'll be close to the cost of the seyco unit, it won't be a uni-tasker. Decided to go with the 12volt dremel so I don't have to fuss with a cord.
  15. See, I knew you folks would have the answers. Never thought to put router in my searches. Supposedly my local Lowes carries them.
  16. I have a small dremel, but when drilling .032-.040 dia holes in 1/2" stock even 1 degree off can cause issues. At my age the hand eye co-ordination ain't what it used to be!
  17. Just finished a project that was too big to be able to drill all the entry holes on my drill press. Did several by hand, and had a few that weren't square. I was looking at the little drill press sorta thing that Seyco sells. It seems to be exactly what I need, but good lord!! At 1/3 of the price I'd still think it was expensive. So my question is this, does anyone know of a similar product that works much the same, but that doesn't cost an arm, a leg, a lung, 2nd and 3rd mortgage and your first born? Any hints, tips, alternatives welcomed.
  18. Thanks everyone. I learned a few things from this project. First and most important, make damn sure your entry holes are drilled 90 degrees!!!! Had a couple that were off because I couldn't reach on my drill press, Second, if you're having issues controlling a blade, switch around until you find one that works. I ended up with a #2 Skip Reverse on some of the finer detail areas. Was slow going in the maple. I used a lot of 'em, but they gave me the control I needed.
  19. I showed the progress photos on the works in progress forum, so here it is finished. The Cross is 1/2" maple the backer is 1/4" black walnut. This has about 7-8 hours to get all the cutting done. I didn't reallize till after that the angle makes the back look off center. It isn't, but it spooked me the first time I looked at the picture! This was a commissioned piece for a lady's sister. It will be shipping to the great state of Texas!
  20. Here's the final resolution from Grizzly. Last Friday, 4/5, we received the saw stand and light from Grizzly, about 4:00pm Pacific time. About 4:45 discovered parts from stand box missing. Called Grizzly customer service, and they took the time to talk to me and get all the information even though they were closing for the weekend. Was told they would get back to me on Monday this week. I received email Monday that they were shipping a new stand, which arrived today all parts intact. As for the one with missing parts, they told me if UPS didn't ask for it back within 5 days we could dispose of it as we wished. All in all very pleased with their customer service. They were very pleasant on the phone, and everything they promised happened in a very timely manner. The stand was replaced in just a few days, no questions asked. Oh, and today we received their 760 page catalog!! LOL!!
  21. I've been using a gloss clear spray lacquer from Lowes for sometime now. I sand to 320 before finishing, then spray 2 coats allowing about 10-20 minutes between coats. Then I very, very, very lightly sand with 400. Two more coats of clear, sanded with 400 between, and I've been very happy with the results. Iused it on all kinds of wood from birch ply to cherry.
  22. In my case the $500 included the stand and work light, an $100 retail value.
  23. Ran a search but so far it isn't finding anything.
  24. As my son is getting used to the new DW788 that arrived today, we noticed a small issue with blade tracking. Looking from the side there is almost .060" movement in the blade from top to bottom of the stroke. On my EX I could loosen the motor mount, rotate the motor slightly, and correct the issue. Any suggestions that don't involve changing holes to slots on the arm mounts?
  25. Good Work! Love Otters!
