Thanks for the comments and suggestions folks! Gluing together an updated version now. Swapped out a couple shapes for different ones, eliminated one shape so there are only 2 per side, re-arranged the shapes to eliminate a couple thin sections on the sides, and per suggestion made the shapes from 3/4" stock instead of 1/2". Will post pics when done.

Looks like a good set up Roly. One suggestion from what we've learned, don't crowd things. People will sometimes glaze over and not really look if things are crowded together. I agree that steps or shelves to show things on different levels is an excellent idea.

Got the prototype for the shape box finished. 5.5" square, 6.5" high plus a 2" ball/handle. Colors are food dye, finish is clear spray lacquer. In future versions I'll be re-arranging the shapes a little as I unintentionally ended up with a couple thin sections where the top slots in place. Thanks for looking.

Denatured alcohol or methylated spirits is ethanol that has additives to make it poisonous, extremely bad tasting, foul smelling or nauseating, to discourage recreational consumption. In some cases it is also dyed.Denatured alcohol is used as a solvent and as fuel for spirit burners and camping stoves. I use it instead of water because it dries very quickly and doesn't seem to raise the grain as much. I didn't realize the some of it is dyed as the stuff I get at Lowes is clear. You can find it with all the other paint thinners and solvents in the paint section.

After I got the Excaliber my son tried to wear it out until we got him a DW788 a couple weeks ago. Now it's a back up, taking a well deserved rest. -

Welcome James. Ask and you'll have more helpful answers than you know what to do with!! I would say that in addition to asking about blades, patterns, wood and so forth, if you haven't gotten a machine yet, try as many as you can before you buy!! Find the one that suits you and either get it then or start saving up for it. I started in Sep of 2012 with a 16" 2 speed dremel scroll saw. Then in June of 2013 I received my Excaliber 21", and boy did I wish I had gotten it sooner. I was able to do some decent stuff on the Dremel, but the Excaliber made it so much easier to do.

I started using food coloring on wooden toys as it made parents more comfortable letting young ones play with them. They do require a clear coating over the dye to seal it. I had looked into tints at a couple different woodworking shops, and for what they charge for a 2 oz bottle I can make a couple gallons using the food coloring and alcohol.

Thanks guys, the colors are food coloring mixed into denatured alcohol. It will have a clear lacquer finish when it's done.

Was happy to receive this latest offering from Steve Good in my inbox this morning. We'd been looking for a couple new educational type things to add to our inventory and this fit in exactly. It was an interesting cut, the top is 1/2" maple and the backer is 1/4" black walnut.

Does Black and Decker RTX tool work in dremel plunge router??

Likely not. The nose of the dremel tool screws into the plunge router attachment, so diameter and pitch would have to match if the B & D even had a threaded nose. -
Hope it heals quickly Doc. I feel your pain, I have a thumb that's not quite the same shape as the other one courtesy of a table saw.

Getting ready for an upcoming craft show and decided to try out a few business card holder ideas. The first is a couple ideas i borrowed from Lumberjocks and Steve Good with design changes, One is purple heart, oak and maple, the other is purple heart and maple. The second two are variations on Steve Good designs, one is zebra wood and oak, the other is black walnut and oak.

I've found the same thing, When cutting thin stock, less than 1/4", I have to use a sacrificial backer to have any hope of control. 2-3mm? Wow, that's less than 1/8"! Didn't know they made it that thin.

I admit, I borrowed most of this idea from a fellow crafter, A great use for scraps and those little wheels I couldn't think of a use for. 3/4" poplar, 3/4" wheels, 7/32" axle pins and 1/4" dowels Each vehicle is about 3" long. I have to admit, I did make a couple cuts on something other than a scroll saw, but axles, turrets and jeep passenger area were done on my EX21.

Which model dremel is the best one now

I just picked up the Dremel 8220 cordless to use in the plunge router, and so far I'm impressed. Variable speed from 5k to 30k, plenty of power for drilling. They're a little pricey at right around $100, but I think they're worth it. -
A quick check online shows that a #71 drill bit is .026" dia. A #2 FD puzzle blade is .015, while a #3 is .031 so iin that case would not fit in the hole. Another thing is check the drill bit. I have found that in some of the less expensive drill sets the marked dia is more of a suggestion than the actual dimension of the drill.

I've had really great results with Krylon paint over Krylon Primer/sealer. 2 coats of primer, light sand with 320, wipe off e verything with tack rag, then light coats of color until I get the results I want.

Oh that looks lovely, you did a great job. I have been meaning to cut this pattern but I simply have not had the time and I only have what is it 2 or 3 weeks. Oh well may be next year if not this. Marg It's a pretty quick cutting pattern. I had less than two hours invested to completely cut it out. #2 blade for the walnut, #5R to cut the walnut and cherry backer stacked.
