  1. The plan is to stack cut the 2 sets of wing bones from 1/8th stock with a 1/4" thick sacrificial backer board. Dust mask will be worn.
  2. Thanks, good to know. will be careful with it.
  3. My son and I are working on a special order articulated dragon for a customer, and I plan to use wenge for the wing bones to give contrast to the maple wings. Any tips, tricks, warnings for the more experienced out there? I've never used this wood before, about all I know is I like its looks, and its dang hard.
  4. Another lefty that cuts clockwise. I love having the EX21 because no matter which way the angle is, I can still cut clockwise!!
  5. You will love the saw, and the folks at Seyco are fantastic to deal with.
  6. = What The Fudge!
  7. Merry Day After Christmas folks!! The other day I ran into a strange what the heck issue with my EX21. Put in a new blade, flipped the tension lever, and started to cut. Particulars: Pegas #7SPR blade cutting 3/4 pine. After a few seconds of cutting the tension lever flipped forward!! Tried several times, same result. Tweaked the cam stop a teensy bit, reset the blade, still happening. Changed to a #5R blade, no issues, several other type/size blades, no issue. Tried the #7 SPR again and within a few seconds the tension lever released. Anyone out there ever experience something like this?
  8. Thanks folks, I appreciate the kind words. The biggest issue Ike, is in the cab area, thankfully hidden by the rear wheels. When I went to attach the frame rails they covered about 1/2 the hole drilled in the cab base block! At first I thought I had cut the block upside down, but a double check assured me I had located it correctly. I had to attach one rail and a filler block and drill that out, then attach the other side and drill it out. A pain but fixable.
  9. Finished the assembly of the grader this morning. I would build it again. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd rate the plans a 7. A couple of dimensional errors and a couple areas where the drawings weren't as informative as they could have been keep it from scoring higher. As I mentioned earlier. I wouldn't recommend it for a first timer, but if you have a few toys under your belt and a love of the retro style toys, the plans package is a decent value.
  10. Top Feeder and Proud Of It!!
  11. Nah, that's the dog sled variation!
  12. Lin has been telling me for some time I needed to make some of these. And we did have a couple folks ask about them recently. So I finally decided is was time to make some. Body and wheels are 3/4" bb ply, rod is 7/16 dia and a 2" wooden knob finished of the top. The flappy feet are 1/16" closed cell foam sheet.
  13. Actually Marg, the painting was the easiest part. A couple coats of krylon rattle can primer, then a couple coats of rattle can krylon color and that was it. Oh, and sanding it to 320 grit helped too.
  14. There is a simple formula for figuring the minimum number of moves to solve the puzzle, it is 2 to the nth - 1. Using 8 disks the result is 255 moves. That oughta keep the little buggers busy for a while!
  15. Just finished this up. Been planning to make one for some time and finally sketched it up a couple days ago. Took longer to sand and paint than it took to cut out. Base is 1/2 pine, disks are 3/8" pine. Thanks for looking
  16. I've been there Doc. When I struggle to fill an order, I usually take a few days off afterwards. It's one of the reasons I try to avoid custom orders. Making what I want, then if folks want to buy it, great, that's the fun part. But a custom order where I have to try and match a picture the customer has in their head? Not so much. I tend to charge about 25% more for custom orders because the fun level is down and the stress level is up.
  17. Very well done Sir, excellent job!
  18. Thanks guys. Yes, the turrets spin. I use 3/8" axle pins for the pivot. I leave them plain wood so kids can paint or color them any way they choose and sell them $10 for a tank and jeep combo. The Christmas scene is a Volker Arnold free download from last year. I enlarged these to 150% so they're about 6" long and 3" high.
  19. Busy making a plethora of smaller less expensive toys to round out our offerings.
  20. I will often use a piece of 3/32 door skin, hardboard, or cheap ply as a bottom sacrificial piece.
  21. Don't give up Ralph. We'e been doing craft fairs for almost 2 years, and we've had good and bad experiences. You learn which ones to repeat and which to cross off the list. We've been lucky in that we've found 2 different craft fairs that are once a month. One we've been going to for about 8 months and are averaging about $250/show. The other is brand new, and at the first one we did almost $300. The test for that one will be in January after the holiday is over. Its big advantage is that it's Inside!! And booths are only $20.
  22. I order about 90% of my wheels from American Woodcrafters Suppy. Here is there page for the wheels I'm using for my truck: http://www.americanwoodcrafterssupply.com/catalog/?112_treaded_wheels_14_hole&show=product&productID=269407&productCategoryIDs=5977,5979 Shipping to California is $7.50. I usually order several different size wheels at once so shipping doesn't hurt so much.
  23. I was using an older Dremel 2 speed before I got my Excaliber, and it would occasionally do the same thing. It had bushings instead of bearings in the arm, and after letting oil soak into them overnight it would run fine for several months before needing it again. If it's not the brushes, soak the bushings at least overnight.
  24. After getting burned by a lady that ordered something and then change her mind after it was finished, I now ask for a 50% non-refundable deposit on orders.
  25. I have this project currently under construction. I work on it sporadically when taking a break from the craft fair projects. It's my fourth project from their plans. CAUTION: Double check dimensions by measuring the drawings, as on previous plans I found a couple typos on dimensions. I Hate cutting parts twice. Since I actually drove big rigs for 8 months I'm modifying mine by detailing the interior of the cab and sleeper areas. I will also be modifying the trailer by giving it a real looking fifth wheel, as well as making the the doors look more like what you would find on a dry van.
