  1. I've been ordering wheels and axle pegs from these folks for at least 4 years. Only twice did they send me the wrong wheels, and both times they told me to keep the wrong ones and within 2-4 days I had the correct ones.
  2. Just wanted to give a shout out to http://www.americanwoodcrafterssupply.com/ These folks are the best! I order all my wheels from them, great prices, fantastic service, and great quality. Just ordered wheels and blades from them on the 20th, and on the 22nd they were in my hand. I found out they have my favorite blade, the Olsen #5PGT-R for a little over half of what I was paying!!
  3. Was reading a notice from Steve Good about General international, the maker of the Excaliber, was having issues again. So checked the Seyco website, and sure enough, all of their Excalibers are listed as temporarily Out Of Stock! When I bought my Anniversary Edition a few years ago they had stopped shipments because of a design issue. I wonder what the problem is this time?
  4. Thanks for the kind words folks. It was ordered as a memorial for one that crossed the rainbow bridge last year. It's due to be delivered to her today, hope she likes it.
  5. Not blue pine DW, it's plain old pine with MinWax grey stain. The body is 1" pine stair tread, wheels and legs are cut from 1/2 and 3/4" pine.
  6. Custom order completed and shipping out tomorrow. This makes the 4th different species so far!
  7. The whole thing is lacquered. I use an Olsen #5PGR blade to give a little more clearance between pieces and tray. I also use #220 sandpaper to radius the edges of the cutouts and letters.
  8. That is fantastic, love the finish!!
  9. Ever open the laptop, login, and then not have a single clue as to what you meant to look up? Yup! This is my theme song!! Senior Moments
  10. It seems lately that about once a week or so I leave the house without my cell. Sometimes I realize it before I get more than a block or two from home, but sometimes I'm miles away. So I decided to do something about it! (The real trick was remembering it when I got home!) A small piece of 1/4" maple, a couple of 1/4" rare earth magnets and about 15 minutes and this is now on the door to the garage. Will it solve the problem? We shall see!!
  11. I make the patterns using the Word Art font. I print it at 72 and then blow it up to the 4" height I use. I then close the loops on letters like A< B< D> O R etc. Of course this means gluing the center pieces back in after the front and back are glued, but it makes the letters stronger.
  12. Thanks folks. I truly wish folks would listen when I answer their questions. A lady we know saw these and asked how long and how much if she ordered three. I told her how much and said it would take 2 weeks. She promptly then asks me if she can have them in 6 days!!! After I explained to her that with drying time and a minimum of 48 hours to let the lacquer top coat cure it was doubtful she said ok and went away. I may have lost a sale, but as you know, if you rush the sanding and finishing you get a crappy result. Plus I learned the hard way I don't even start a custom order until I have payment in hand so a couple days would be lost there waiting for paypal.
  13. Wombatie, I mix the food coloring with denatured alcohol to the intensity I want. Then I make a 50/50 mix of shellac and denatured alcohol, and give the pieces a light coat before staining. It seals the wood a bit and helps minimize blotchy-ness. I use a light coat and make sure to wipe off excess. Letting it dry an hour or so and then adding a second coat really intensifies the color. I let them dry overnight and then put on 2-3 coats of clear lacquer.
  14. I did one of these a little while ago for a friend to give as a Christmas present. A friend of hers saw it and ordered 3, one for her daughter and two as gifts. They are made from two layers of 1/2" baltic birch ply, colors are food coloring, then 3 layers clear lacquer. The letters are 4" high. Thanks for looking.
  15. Phantom if you look here: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/87999and scroll down through the comments you will find my sketches of all the bits for it. Enjoy!
  16. That is nice!
  17. I designed the forklift about a year and a half ago to hold a set of four pallet coasters. Since then I have done them in many different color schemes per customer request, but this was the first to request a specific logo. Couldn't find one I liked, so what the heck, I made one! Thanks for looking.
  18. I have finished the Osprey. I've wanted to build one for a while, and now that I've built one, not in a real rush to do it again. The finish is krylon with a clear lacquer top coat. Lettering and lines are vinyl. Thanks for looking.
  19. The font is called Word Art, I got it off the web. The shellac fills in the fibers somewhat like a primer, and allows for a more even result with the dye.
  20. Before coloring mix shellac 50/50 with denatured alcohol. Apply thin coat to piece and let dry. I mix the food coloring with denatured alcohol, (rubbing alcohol can sometimes precipitate out the dye pigments) to the intensity I want, then apply thinly, allow to sit for about 5 seconds then wipe off excess. Re-apply till you get the results you want.
  21. This was a commissioned piece for a friend to give to her Granddaughter. It is made from two layer of 1/2" Baltic Birch ply. Letters colored with food coloring, clear lacquer top coat. Letters are 4" high, the whole thing is 23" long. Thanks for looking.
  22. Very Well Done!! Thanks for sharing!
  23. Very well done! I have made several of these from different woods. They are a good seller this time of year.
  24. For those from the California area you might recognize these. They represent the Tower Bridge towers from Sacramento. I was commissioned to make them for the city play table at the Sacramento Children's Museum. Each tower comes apart into 6 pieces that interlock with dowels, and all pieces are interchangeable. That was a bit tricky, never underestimate the value of a good jig! Would you believe that, counting the pins to lock the dowels in place there are 102 pieces in the two towers, and they are only 13.5" high by 8" wide!! The center sections are 1/4" oak laminated to a 7/8" birch core, the towers are made of two pieces of birch with a 1/4" oak strip on the outside face to hide the dowel locating holes. Yellow food coloring and poly used for the finish. thanks for looking.
  25. Hi Scrolling Steve, I saw the picture here I thought $15 was a bit steep for the plans so I got some paper, pencils, straight edge and a french curve and had at it. Mine is much simpler to make, and by using a 1" thick stair tread for the bodies, I didn't have to laminate any stock.
