  1. Yep that's the way I understood it
  2. For the longest time I held out saying I didn't need one, then my phone broke and I took the plunge.....now I'm addicted!
  3. I did the brad nail board too, it works great. I'll go get a clip on light, my garage (shop) has flouresant tubes and it's kinda shady where I have the finishing area setup.
  4. Glad to help out, I have to say I really like this site, lots of good people on here with tons of great information!
  5. I gave this a try the other day. I was cutting an inlay of my daughter's name for the lid of a trinkit box, I was left with a piece of wood with the letters cut out of it. then I rememberd this thread, went to wolly world (walmart) and bought some of this clay. mashed it into the letters and cooked it. I found it actaully expanded slightly after baking. I think it was surprisingly easy to use, sanded easy and worked well with a polycrylic clear coat. Thanks for making this post, I can see lots of uses for this. Mike
  6. with this HVLP system you can't adjust the air pressure, it's a constant 10psi. however the gun is highly adjustable (at least based on my novice experience anyway) I found that using the more centered pattern instead of the horizontal or vertical fan pattern works really well. at first I was putting too much clear on and getting runs, but I've dialed it in pretty good now and I'm really liking this thing!
  7. Welcome to the site! I found this site a while back, there is a lot of great info on here adn everyone seems to be very helpful. I'm from Kentucky too, Eastern Kentucky. . . Mike
  8. I gave this a try today. Bought an Earlex HVLP spray system model 5000 for $250 and sprayed minwax polycrylic. So far so good, but I've got lots of experimenting to do! 2 things I noticed real quick are the house doesn't stink and the spray gun covers a large area really quickly.
  9. It looks cool but I do agree on the plastic issue. If it was all metal it would cost more but last forever.
  10. that's simply awesome! you've got some great skills
  11. very nice work. I did a fire department plaque for a few guys I know locally. (pics below) we went two different directions though. mine is strickly fretwork. where yours looks more like an intrasia design. I've yet to try my hand at intrasia, but i really like the way it looks. again very nice job. it's hard to tell but it's a two layer project, the backer is 1/4 birch ply, and is painted blue. the front is 1/8 birtch ply, unfinished. this is about 10 inches on it's biggest side.
  12. what kind of spray gun are you using? I'd like to get away from the laquer if it's possible, water based would be so much easier for the reasons you mentioned. plus my shop is in my garage, which is attached to my house and when I spray paint or clear coat my whole house smells like that stuff. I use a respirator and open the door but it still stinks up the whole house. ever use water based paint through your spray gun? if so tell us about it. some of my projects have required a colored back ground (multiple layer fretwork project) and again I hate spraying with toxic paints. thanks Mike
  13. I did make an all wood gear clock with my scroll saw...it looks amazing but only works for a few seconds. I think my gears weren't perfectly round. it was fun making it though good luck
  14. yeah that's what happens with this one! collects more dust than it does counting the days. My wife showed me one, so I made my own, added more sides to the cubes (8 sides)
  15. maybe i'm slow....what is GCW?
  16. My step father and his daughter
  17. here is a nift little dust collector that counts down the days until Christmas
  18. Well I got to play a bit with cutting the plexiglass, I just put blue tape on top of the plexiglass, spray glued the patter to the top, and cut with a slow blade speed. It did fuse a little but really was much easier than I expected it to be. I'm going to experiment with some other materials and thicknesses Thanks for all the info.
  19. I had not thought of that, excellent idea, thanks for sharing
  20. I'm going to get some plexiglass tomorrow.... did it melt? I was afraid it would melt. I thought I read somewhere to put was on the blade to help it not do that. anyway i'll find out for sure tomorrow when I get the plexi glass thanks for info!
  21. I was asked by a cake maker to see if I could use plastic (or some type of similar material) to make designs that she could use as a template when she makes cakes. the idea would be she'd lay the design on top of the cake to use as a template to trace from then pull it off and leaving the icing behind. or she could lay the plastic template on top of the cake and dust sugar on top of it and when she pulls the template off only the design would be left. I told her i'd never tried anything else but to give me a few days of trial and error and i'm sure I could find something. my question is has anyone on here every used other materials other than wood to cut with a scroll saw. I'm going to play with some plexiglass and lexan i have in the garage but if somone has cracked this nut before I'd like to hear about it. Thanks in advance.
  22. great idea thanks
  23. that's pretty cool, nice work
  24. I have and continue to give lots of it away. I only recently started to sell some of it. I don't make much at all but it's nice to offset the costs and put a little change in my pocket.
  25. I'm pretty new here but let's see what I can come up with. . .
