Those are cool Dan. Are you using food coloring or stain? I've been playing with food coloring and DNA, I don't like the results yet.

I hope that the new year brings the concept of the saw dust fairy. Much like the tooth fairy, only for every pound of saw dust that is made we prosper twice as much as the past year. Health, peace and blessing to all that this forum reaches!! Happy New Year!!

I finally get a break from the action. Been working 14/16 hour days for almost 3 weeks. The 22nd and 23rd, I only got 1 hour of sleep, and that only because I fell asleep in the chair while eating diner! It was a very good holiday season this year. Here are a few items I did for my clients this year. The first 2 items are modified Sue Mey patterns. I think I might have already posted the name plates, I can't remember but here they are again. I hope everyone had a profitable season this year.

Very nice cutting Paul! Have you figured out why the 3/0 spiral kept breaking on you?

What kind of saw are you using? Where is the blade breaking, at the bend or in the middle? When I use the 3/0 spiral, I don't put the same amount of tension on them as I do a flat blade. When doing a portrait, I usually use only 2 blades. The first one will cut about half (depending on size of project) and then break in the middle. These blades usually bend at the bottom clamp for me too but they last for a while before they break.

I'm going through the same thing Doc. I have orders from September that were paid for and the people want them for Christmas. Some days I can make myself get in the shop and get something done, most days I can't. I've wasted 2 months because I dread going to the shop. I've turned down a lot of work, telling people I too far behind. It sucks! And now it's crunch time, I have to get these things finished or go out of business, which I don't want to do.

I've only used it for a few hours, but so far I like it alot better than the 788. It's so quiet and no vibration.

Got it today! After watching some videos and reading some reviews, I thought I was going to have to basically put the whole saw together. The only thing I had to do was put the table on. The air hose was already attached. I guess they've added a push pin to hold the arm up, someone had said something about tightening a screw to hold it up and another said use a 2 x 4. This saw has a push pin to hold it up. Gotta go see how it cuts!!

If you stack cut plywood, glue your pattern to one piece and then use clear packing tape to tape the pieces of wood together. On hard wood you can put blue painters tape on the wood first then glue your pattern to the tape. If you put the tape on plywood when you remove it, it will pull some wood fragments off with it. At least this happens when I use plywood.

It could also be the plywood you're using. If you get it from the big box stores it is low grade and really no good for scrolling.

That's a great first attempt! Go to http://www.mikesworkshop.comand get yourself some good blades and you'll be a pro in no time. Wish I could show you my first name. But I can't, it ended up in the burn pile! Those sure make some excellent shelf decorations. Props to the kiddo too for the paint job!!

I have found with stack cutting, when I need to sand the bottom piece I use 100 grit paper and it works rather fast to remove any fuzzies. Then I go over it with 220 grit and it's good to go.

For "block" type projects that I do, i.e. name plates and desktop items, I use either poplar which is rather inexpensive to buy. I also use Maple. A little more expensive, but I love the look of the wood. In my opinion, poplar will be a great wood to start with. It's soft and very easy to work with.

I use FD blades exclusively. I like the FD-UR #1 and the #3. I also use the #2 and #3/0 spirals for portraits. Mike at Mikes Workshop is the best place to get them. He is awesome to deal with. Usually get my order of blades in 3 days.

Kelly, when you lift the foot to remove the wood, you have to give the thumb screw a little more umpf, to get it to hold up. I had the same problem. Parts for that saw are very cheap, but shipping (for where I live) wasn't. I would buy 2 tension rods for like $4 and it would cost almost $13 for shipping.

Marg, when I used the Ryobi and removed the foot it was very hard to control the wood. It jumped around too much. I never understood why someone would remove it. Then when I started using the 788 and removed the foot, I thought, "so this is what they ment". It is a completely different machine. I haven't used the foot on my 788, but you really have to on the Ryobi. Or at least I had to. I could not control the wood at all without it.

That looks good, nice straight lines. Would that saw happen to be a SC164VS the chicken is sitting on? I used one of those saws for years, I loved it. Actually I used it up until October of last year, then I bought the DeWalt 788. THe only problem I ever had with it was the tension rod, it wasn't made from very good material and had to replace a few times.

Those are pretty cool. If they are 2 x 4s cut in half and you used a spiral blade to cut them, what size spiral did you use? I've tried using spirals on 1/2" and they don't work. I either had to use a large spiral which wasn't able to cut any fine detail, or use a small spiral which wasn't able to cut the wood. I have a cople projects I'd like to do in 1/2" with a spiral so I'm interested in knowing how you acheived those great pieces! -
Thanks Larry. Especially for the user manual. That was the main complaint in all the reveiws I've read, the manual was incomplete or missing.
