  1. Sir, You earned the name AmazingKevin !!! jerry
  2. Hi Newbie, Re: Painting. Would it work for you to play the intarsia game? Use the same wood if you like, but instead of trying to paint to a line, saw it. Paint the individual pieces & glue them to the backer. Just a thought (At my age, I don't get many) jerry
  3. Hi Tony, Just checked with my Sweet Wife. She won't let me drive our car from the U.S. to Ireland. Woman are like that you know. jerry
  4. Hi Tony, If I have an old finished piece but no longer have the pattern, I just take it to a copy shop and copy at 100%. (or resize if you wish). Often I lay a maroon paper on top of the piece when copying to make the perimeter easier to see when sawing. Hope this helps you Sir, jerry
  5. savethebeer, Silly my. I thought everyone cut open their crackers with the scroll saw. Guess I'm still not too old to learn new things after all! jerry
  6. Why do pay attention to you clowns ?? jerry
  7. I have noticed this more often as I keep having birthdays. It's gotta be the blades fault. jerry
  8. IF you make your own stand, check out this posting; http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/15942-my-new-command-control-center/?hl=%2Bcommand+%2Band+%2Bcontrol jerry
  9. The ONLY thing I ever use for scrolled items & painted woodcarvings is Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Enamel. I called them and they told my that it is only good up to 200 degrees. Above that, it will start to bubble. Will not try any type of wax. My Sweet Wife, who is an excellent cook felt that wax might melt and stick to the bottom of the (pot)(bowl). Will stay with 50/50 mineral oil & BLO. Will give them another bath in a month, let them dry thoroughly & rub with a paper bag. Currently the still have a very noticeable linseed oil smell. Am in no hurry to give them out. jerry
  10. Hi New Friend, I bought a new Delta this summer. A problem with Delta & Dewalt now is that they are made in a foreign country. Lots of complaints that they are shipped with only minimal grease in the bearings. Watched a video on greasing a Dewalt, took apart my brand new Delta and greased it according to this video. The Delta & the Dewalt are identical inside. Only the exterior shape, color AND PRICE are different. jerry
  11. Hi Kepy, 48 hours, hanging in the garage, but the humidity was high. Per DW's suggestion, I will let it hang in a cold Iowa garage for 6 weeks and give it another bath. Wait months after that to try the paper bag again. Currently it still has a noticeable BLO smell. Am in no rush to give them away. jerry
  12. DW, Thanks for the tip Sir. jerry
  13. Terrylee; A Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year to you as well. Fish; Our garage isn't wired heavy enough for a decent sized heater. That's OK. I do carving in the house over winter for a change of pace. jerry
  14. Hi, 3/4" oak. Soaked in a 50/50 mixture of mineral oil and boiled linseed oil. Per one of the suggestions in the link below, I rubbed it a lot with a plain paper bag. Unable to see that it did anything. http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/17283-another-how-do-i-finish-a-trivet-question/ It never ceases to amaze me how quickly and readily you nice folks jump in and share your wisdom and experience. It is appreciated! Am done sawing until spring. (Read "Iowa - unheated garage") I posted a "Cheat Sheet" in PATTERN MAKING for any novice that would like to design their own with Inkscape. jerry
  15. Hi All, Just finished my second trivet. Soaked it in 50/50 mineral oil/BLO per a few of the suggestions that were posted here in the past: http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/17141-trivet-question/ Looks OK, but dull and drab. IF it is to be used as a trivet (as opposed to a decoration), is there a "shine" I can apply? Currently I finish EVERYTHING with Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Enamel, sprayed from 4 directions "about 10 minutes apart." Can I use that, or what other possibilities? My concern is, will heat and a shiny finish fight with each other? Thanks a Bunch, jerry Note, probably next week I will print instruction for making a trivet with Inscape.

    mistake

Hi Kepy, Many years ago I got a magnifying visor that flips down from a headband. Used it for carving at the time. Now use it also for scrolling & drilling entry holes. Love it !! The lens is getting cloudy. Santa will bring me a new one: http://www.ehobbytools.com/contents/en-us/p3743_Product_3565.html Be sure you get a 12" focal length (or greater.) Most of them on the market have a closer focal length. You could get your nose bent with the top blade clamp. I wouldn't consider sawing without. jerry
  17. I have a Delta that was purchased new this summer. It's identical to the 788. Interesting video. My old $70 Menards did not have the noticeable front to back motion and was better for cutting corners. Have quit sawing for the winter, but will try a different approach in the spring. The blades seat further back in the blade clamps than is necessary. Will cut a very narrow strip out of heavy "tin", such as the side of a coffee can. Place it in the bottom clamp and bend it around the clamp to hold it in place, propping the bottom of the blade forward. Don't know if I will succeed or fail. If you place bets, keep them under $5 dollars please. Don't want you going hungry. jerry
  18. A Delta is the same saw, but sells for less. Here is a parts list: http://www.deltamachinery.com/downloads/manuals/scroll_saws/40-694/40-694%20Scroll%20Saw%20Parts%20List%20Rev%203.pdf You probably need Part # 23 & 95. I assume you could find a Delta website. I don't have a clue if Delta parts also sell for less than Dewalt. jerry
  19. Here is my first attempt at designing & cutting a trivet. It's for a Son (& wife) that is a mechanical engineer. They live in Texas. 3/4" oak. Because of Iowa temperature, will not apply a finish until late spring. Critiques welcome. (I can take it) jerry
  20. The village idiot has an error in the instructions. THE ALIGNMENT MARKS CANNOT BE PLACED AT RANDOM LOCATIONS !! This would cause the "back" word to be offset.. Before starting, take a straight edge & pencil/pen. Extent the R. & L. sides of the Word pattern down to the edge of your paper. Use these two extended lines for your alignment locations. You only need to cut in the marks in 1/16 or 1/8". This will center the "back" word when you cut the perimeter My mistake. jerry
  21. In a few days I will quite sawing because of Iowa temperatures. Have made 2 Word Art patterns to be cut in the spring. Two of our sons are senior engineers. For each of their desks, will use their full names for the large words, & company name(s) for the small word(s). Will have the painted backer sandwiched between two cut out pieces, as opposed to just on 1 side, which is normally done. The finished product will look the same on the front & back. In the past, I used 2 pieces of solid 1/4" oak. 2 things I didn't like. I feel that the 1/4" cut piece is too thick, so will go with 1/8" http://www.ocoochhardwoods.com/ Secondly, occasionally there would be a black line showing on the top & sides from the paint. After this, I will mask out the backer before painting. Click on the instructions for how I plan to do this. Hopefully it will give some of you a new idea, or product to sell. Critiques & suggestions most welcome! jerry Word Art for a desk.doc
  22. dgman & all the rest of you, You have all been a heap of assistance. Always ready and willing to share your experiences & knowledge. It is greatly appreciated. I have a few more hours of sawing before I finish a trivet I designed. Will post a picture of it next week, before I treat it. jerry.
  23. Me again; (Go ahead and "sigh") I can take it. For those of you that use; Mineral oil Boiled linseed oil Tung oil etc. Do you soak it, and if so, how long? How long do you hang it to dry before you are comfortable setting it on a tabletop? Thanks, jerry
  24. dgman, I checked a local Walgreens drug store site. The list mineral oil as a LUBRICANT/LAXATIVE. That's not one of my problems!!! I will go with tung oil or boiled linseed oil.jerry
  25. Me again, Some of you are using mineral OIL. When I search our Home Improvement stores, all they have is mineral SPIRITS. Is that the same?? Thanks for all the above responses !! jerry
