  1. It's becoming annoying because I'm not even working with the stuff, but some stuff I do in the shop now it's still causing a reaction. Tonight I was cutting a new ZCI for the tablesaw. I unhooked the big 5" dustcollection tube from an adapter that steps it down so I can use it with my random orbit sander.. had a hard time getting it to stay over the coupler that is attached to the tablesaw side. looked in the opening t make sure a a pice of the tubing was not obstucting it. (it's that type like the old shop vacs.. spire wire that is molded with plastic) I could see dust inside the tube, and while making sure there was no plastic piece in the way, i must have touched some of the dust.. 15 min later i had a softball size section of my skin near my armpit getting red and itchy.. so into the shower I go, and that pair of clothes right into the wash... Seems that all I need to do is take a shower and the reaction usually goes away.. so it has to be touch related.. guess this weekend I'm gonna have to pull the dust collector outside again, take teh fan cover off, make sure to clean it with windex or something, and then use a hose to clean out the inside of that 5" flexible tubing. I used that piece to suck up all the chips and dust from the lathe.. so it must still ahve some dust that's stuck to the ribbing. it's my only guess.. cause I can sit in the garage for hours cutting at teh scroll saw with oak and cherry with no problem.. the only thing different today was i touched the dust on the inside of the hose.
  2. I talked to PSI, and they think it was the bocote that caused it. They suggest I stay away from the rosewood family.. but I've turned rosewood pens with no problem in the past.. They say that the remaining pieces I have are cocobolo, paduak, and zebrawood.
  3. I did pick up a 2 sheets each of birch ply from Michaels.. looks solid core. no knots in it don't see voids in the plys where it's cut.. May try that first, just to see how it goes. I was going to cut it with a 2/0 blade Travis.. I think it has enough teeth to keep it smooth.. The hair in the pattern has the smallest details, so I'll start there and see if I like how it's goin. I did upsize it a bit. It's on 11x17 paper, but probably is closer to 10x14 or so.. just a bit larger so the hair can be cut easier.
  4. That's nice. I like it.
  5. So if I went with a #2/0 blade, what size hole do you use for one.. Some of those cutouts on the pattern Birch made for me are def smaller than 1/16" which is the smallest size I can chuck up in my drill press or hand drills.. I can prob go get the small chuck for my dremel which I believe will chuck down to 1/32". I have 3 of those sized drill bits.
  6. I have a portrait pattern that I want to cut, that Birch made for me in the Pattern Request forum. I would like to use a #2/0 reverse tooth, or a #2 reverse tooth blade. I am planning on framing it somehow. My question is what wood would you all use for it? I've never cut portraits before. I was thinking of using 1/8" birch ply, or 1/4" birch ply. I plan on framing it behind glass. So, my questions: 1. What wood should I use 2. How do you get the black background, I'm guessing a piece of 1/8" ply painted black? 3. What finish would you use on it after your done? I don't mind cutting and making my own frame.. I just figure that by the time you put 1/8" backer, 1/8" wood, and then the glass, your looking at about 3/8" rabbit to hold it all... am I right? Thanks in advance for all your help. I'm sure you guys will steer me in the right direction.
  7. That's nice. I'm hoping to finish one of the single heart candle holders I posted before, but out of cherry. I found a piece of end cut with bark on it still, so when I planed it down it appears that there must have been a branch or something in that area, cause the grain is really tight and swirly looking. I'll get some pics when I finish it. Here is a pic of it without any finish on it. Just sanded to 220.
  8. Looks nice.
  9. Yes Marg, the reaction started going away just after taking the shower. The good thing was that after washing the dust collector bags, when I turned it on, the shop smelt all Downy fresh for about 10 min.. LOL
  10. I like the idea, but it will defeat the reverse tooth blades I'm using.
  11. I've turned rosewood with the PSI starter set.. they send you enough to make 5 pens.. no reaction from rosewood.
  12. It's either Cocobolo or Bocote.. But I turned 2 yesterday. The gearshift one and another.. and I had reactions yesterday and big time today when i was down cleaning up all the chips. my sides and stomach all got red blotches on them and started itching. soon as I was done, I emptied the dust collector bags outside, got all the wood out of them best I could, and threw them in the wash machine so that it wont' have any residual dust to push through the bags. Then I hopped in the shower.. so far the blotches are fading and it's not as itchy and getting lighter in color. Guess once I get a definite ID on what it is, I won't be turning it. I'll post a pic of the the other just so someone can maybe ID that too.. wish they were marked... The kit says it comes with Cocobolo, Bocote, Padauk, Bubinga, and Zebrawood Looking at this link.. http://www.caponhi.com/latentleisure/Wo ... orking.htm the bocote box looks like the gearshift colors and grain, and the bubinga looks like the stopper in this edit.
  13. I have pics of the finished pieces after they got a finish on them. I'm not photographer. Thanks to Sheila Landry for the heart designs. I enlarged them to 125% over hers, as the jar fits so much better (and my first attempt at 100% with not enough spray adhesive and the pattern was constantly lifting off in teh small curls at the hearts tops.. but we won't tell anyone that.. we'll just keep that little goof amongst ourselves right?)
  14. they really mean kb. Prob a typo.
  15. that is the size of the file. if your saving the image as a jpg and your 64x64 or under, you should easily get under the max file size. If you want, PM me the original file and I'll shrink it for you.
  16. Thank you. I just finished cutting the single heart design with the tape, and it took like 5 min to get the tape off and it left no residue. Compared with the hour + I spent with the just spray way before. I'm sure I used too much spray before, but I think I'll stick with using the tape.
  17. Sorry to hear it Messman.. My parents live in Florida.. The Villages. LOL
  18. That must have been a pain getting the split ring through the wood without breaking it. How did you do it? I like them a lot.
  19. On my Delta, it is 2 blocks that a screw goes through. So when you tighten it, it brings teh 2 blocks together. The screw never touches the blade.. but maybe I'll take them apart and check the blocks. Thanks.
  20. When cutting my first project I was mainly listening to Hollywood Undead, Skillet, and a live recording of The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem. Oh, and I did put a little Native American flute music from Douglas Spotted Eagle at the beginning of the second project.
  21. My shop is in my garage which is under the left side of the house. A raised ranch style. During the summer it stays pretty cool actually. prob mid 60's. The entire back of the garage concrete is under ground level, so it keeps the concrete cool. During the winter though, it's way too cold to do any work.. prob in the mid to upper 40's on those real cold New England winter days. I am planning on actually taking the garage door out and framing in a set of french patio doors and a window someday. I dont' use my garage as anything but a wood shop anyway. But framing it in would really keep the damn spiders out too. I just can't seem to get rid of all the damn spiders during the summer. Mainly daddy long legs ones. But it's annoying to see cob webs and spider webs all over the upper corners and spider poop and dead insets on the one window sill in the garage.
  22. I know this is an old thread, but why start a new one. What I'm seeing on my Delta, is the blade breaks down by where the bottom is clamped in the bottom blade holder. I have never broken a blade in the cutting area. I'm not sure if I'm over tightening the blade or what is going on. I use the 1/8" flex rule. I prob have a little less flex than an 1/8" but not too much less. It does not happen a lot.. I'd say especially if I'm minding my pressure. Just seems strange that it's not in the thinnest part where the teeth are. I've only used #2R blades so far.
  23. Nope.. never heard of him till I started browsing this board. I'll have to take a look.
  24. My Delta 16" vibrates like hell even at like 1/3 speed... But it's what I got for now, and I'm learning to live with it. Glad you like your Excalibur so much. I really like that pattern you cut out of the purpleheart.
  25. I just wanted to say hello. I forgot what link it was, but I found a thread the other day on using painters tape under the pattern to make it easier to get off. I haven't touched a scroll saw since just after high school, and that was back in 1992. My first project back I used the Loctite light duty spray. On the real tight corners and small pieces, the pattern kept coming up off the wood.. So I tried 3M Super 77.. after cutting the whole project thinking how well it stayed on.. I couldn't get the darn thing off! LOL. I used mineral spirits and even that was horrible. Right now on my second small project, I 'm half way through, and I can't wait to finish and see how that tape comes off. I'm currently cutting the single heart pattern from Shiela Landry's candle tray. The first one is drying with the 3rd coat of semi gloss poly on it. All my tools are in the garage. Which during the winter is gonna be damn cold to use if I even do. It will routinely be about 40 degrees in there. I'm currently using an older Delta 40-540 16inch saw. It's doing the job, but I think next year I'm gonna see about getting the Dewalt 788. Here is a pic of the first set of hearts cut, but no finish applied.. I know it's not a majorly intricate pattern, but for not having touched a saw in like 19 years, I'm happy with it. Looks nice with the poly on it.
