  1. You know Bill, I'll try to do that but even if it fails somewhere in the future, the mere fact that it was only $25 and did what I needed it to do for a reasonable amount of time is good enough for me. But, with that said, I get the feeling from using it that it will endure. It is so much better than the $19 ROS that I bought from H/F 8 years ago. It was heavy, single speed and very aggressive. This one comes very close to what I had with my Dewalt. I don't mind being the guinea pig on this.
  2. Kevin, I too wanted to try the Super Sharp blades but the price was just too much. When I bought my EX it came with a bunch of them in sizes 5-7-9. About 8 dozen in all. I tried a number 7 on a compound cutting and I didn't find it any better than the MG 5 that I had been using. I would have to be production cutting thick material before I'd spend the money on them. JMHO!
  3. Kevin, not sure about area specific. All I know is, this is the 3rd time I've seen it on sale at the price I paid in the last 2 months. Are you signed up to get their email blasts? I get one almost every day. I keep a list of the stuff I want/need and when enough stuff on my list is on sale I make a run to H/F. I needed a better sander so this was timed just right.
  4. I will report back. But, to compare, I had a very good Dewalt sander at one time that cost me about $90 at the time. 10-12 years ago when I still had an income. This sander is just as nice and I love the price. Since most everything is made offshore, it's just about impossible to "buy American" so I just shop for the best product/price now. I'd love to find something this good at this price made in the U.S.A.
  5. No vibration and I used it for two solid hours with no numbness or tingling in my arthritic hands.
  6. You can also remove the dust catcher and plug in a vac hose.
  7. I get the almost daily email specials from them and the latest one had the sander at $24.99. I tried to use a 25% off coupon but they wouldn't let me use it. Darn! I will be going back for the finish sander though. I had a Makita years ago and liked it but it got sold when we liquidated.
  8. I use the MG in #5 mostly. I bought from DnD and also Qtena as they are only an hour from me so I get 2 day service.
  9. Not a typo. They are on sale. $10 off.
  10. I went to H/F and purchased the Bauer 5" ROS sander that is on sale right now for $24.95. I am very happy to say, it is all that I had hoped and more. It is lightweight, quiet, smooth and has 6 speeds. It uses the Velcro type paper, 8 holes for dust so the paper that I had from my cheapy H/F sander works with it. The biggest thing is the variable speed. I was using it on #4 and it was just perfect at that speed. I did notice that if you tried to use it at the lowest 2 speeds, it would bog and stop with very little pressure on the plate. But, all-in-all, I'm really happy. Especially with the price. It also has a dust collector on it and it works great. I do recommend removing it and lubing the o-ring that holds it on. It's a bear taking it off the first time. I plan to also buy the 1/4 sheet finishing sander that they have on sale but maybe next month. I've exceeded my tool budget for this month already.
  11. I haven't had the need to make frames yet but this is a very interesting topic. Following along for future reference.
  12. I think, and don't quote me here, it is also called "masonite". If I am wrong, please enlighten me.
  13. I have the model that superceded yours. I'm still using the toner cartridges that came with it. I wish I had pulled the trigger years ago. I wasted a fortune on inkjet printers both in ink and paper. Oh, and time too. I recommend Brother laser printers 100%.
  14. Rockler makes some corner clamping fixtures that would probably be better and easier to work with. Or, you can make a fixture that you could clamp to. I never did trust the pair of those that I had and they were much newer and cheesier made than the ones you have.
  15. I thought I understood the whole thing but after watching the video and listening to somebody here on SSV talk about breaking blades, it all of a sudden hit me that I had the saw adjusted all wrong. No more problems now though.
  16. Les, have you ever gone to the Bushton website and watched the video that describes the whole process? I just did it again this morning and it cleared up what I was doing wrong. Now that I understand the whole operation, I no longer have problems with the blades being too short and I am now getting the proper tension on them. I also found out that I was inserting the blades into the holders wrong. Anyway, the lever nearest to the user, (you) works great if everything else is correct. Unless the mechanism is worn out or not functioning correctly. Have you ever put any oil on the lever? The more I find out about this saw and get used to it, the more I like it. I have just finished cutting all the pieces and parts for the jewelry box that I'm making, all on this saw. I love my EX but I'm growing very fond of the Hawk 226 VS Ultra also. I don't see myself ever needing another saw.
  17. I realize your situation is a bit different. I was aiming my question at the other hobbyists like me. And, it's hard for me to visualize living in a rural atmosphere. Around here, it's not fun to go anywhere. It takes 2 plus hours just to get out of town. And even then, you're not out of the fray until the next day. It's terrible. Another reason we are looking to relocate.
  18. I have been having the same "short blade" problem with my new to me Hawk. I determined that I still don't quite understand the tension system on the saw. Once I backed off the tension lever, the blades grew about 3/8". Lol.
  19. Do you folks factor in the cost of driving to/from? Wear & tear on your car, insurance and ???. Sometimes it's just cheaper to buy it and have it shipped. Living in California with $4 gas and lots of sitting on the freeway parking lots, I don't drive much unless the savings is huge or a special deal.
  20. I'll post pics once it's finished. I'm almost done cutting. Just sanding and oiling after that.
  21. Thanks Paul, I went ahead and bought that just to have it on hand. I may never use it but at least I'll have it when I need it.
  22. Have you ever noticed how Home Depot seems to be the best laxative in the world? I get inside the store and I had better find the "bano".
  23. Me too but my wife makes sure I get a walk in every day. We are trying to keep the joints fluid. Not the kind you smoke, but the other kind.
  24. I hated to ask this question. At my age, I should be able to figure this stuff out on my own but I'm stumped. I have looked at every source I can find but nobody has this wood. So, hopefully I'm not opening a huge can of worms, can anybody recommend either a source for this wood or a substitute for it in color and grain. I'm not into staining so I really don't want to have to stain something to look like it. My finished project will be done with Watco natural oil. The wood is going to be part of a floral lid on the jewelry box I'm making and it will be 5 petals between 8 red cedar petals and 5 petals of aspen. The cedar is very red, the aspen very light. A centerpiece of walnut. The sassafras in the picture looks like it's sort of a light brown/tan with a straight grain. They are all of differing thickness. The sassafras is supposed to be 1/2". I even thought of gluing up some 1/4" poplar and substituting it but it's too green. Thanks for any and all advice.
  25. Congrats. It's the best life has to offer. Just stay as busy as possible and not too much sitting down. Stay active.
