  1. Thanks all. I always find the design the hardest because till I find one program that I am comfortable with and something better than a mouse hours spent hand drawing lines cutting can be time consuming but when it's all done you say to yourself wow finally
  2. I find that the mouse jerks too much for drawing corners and circles so maybe somebody has better ideas using these tools hopefully some have bought one to tell us
  3. Thanks all for the replies like the old saying goes one mans junk is another mans goldmine. Saving wood for later does come in handy eventually . I'll have to get looking at all your projects as I have been busy and haven't had time to see all the talent here peoples work still astonishes me
  4. Kevin I have a idea for ya.I don't know if you have a router but if ya did use the first cross that you have for a template after you sand it perfect and nail it to 3 or 4 layers of the wood to cut out wider than a routers width all around. Buy a sleeve to attach to router on bottom it acts as a guide and follow the pattern around and you will have perfect cuts every time, Thats what I would do to save time and sanding
  5. I was wondering if any of the members who make pattern for portraits or straight patterns have tried or bought a digital pen for graphic on a tablet.I was thinking of buying one instead of using a mouse and need some opinions if it's worth spending the money. Any thoughts are welcome. Damian
  6. That's hilarious Fab4 and thanks you two for viewing
  7. A idea came to me the other day as I was working out looking at one of my pictures hanging there of my friends and how we still get together all of us except one rest his soul. I decided to do a portrait in wood for all 7 of us left and to give one to each when we get together again. Was supposed to be at christmas but with each having their own life with families well maybe summer. This project was the biggest photo to do yet topping off my last one of 5 .Every face was a challenge and with a printer that only did half of shot had to split picture and make a pattern of each side while keeping same size of each body was a daunting task .Had to do some hand drawing in of portrait of faces as neither gimp nor coyote picked up every detail. I managed to get all seven done with about 380 holes in each. Then the frame was next to acomodate this size of pattern as I wasnt going to buy all these frames so I found some old oak flooring I saved and cut and shaved down and found a plastic template to make outside edge of frame lucked out with exact number of curves , then cut some old kitchen cubboard doors I had in junk down to size and brushed some black paint for backround and glued together. All in all I think I wrapped up about a week of time from planning to assembly so all in all the group I hang around with all these years will get a piece of me and over the next years something to see how we all have aged. My next project will hopefully be smaller.Always a challenge to scroll though and very rewarding!
  8. hi welcome from a newbie here.good to see the spirit is still there dont give up and take it slow and if you get bored try a different project and come back to it later even if its years,Need advise ask the many friends here even if you think its a funny idea or question. Damian
  9. I'm my opinion in this is having had a uncle who was a carpenter I would say this is used for storing chisels and hammers and bottom drawers for screws. The person probably installed doors or so maybe not
  10. Thanks for the kind remarks all .This man was a tough cowboy conquering health problems to the end always having the last joke to say.His family will always be reminded that he is around forever with this small piece of woodwork to be given to them shortly!
  11. History in the making, someone hopefully to take over your desire.Great job Damian
  12. Early Dec was a sad way to start the month with passing of wifes uncle.i asked the membership for some ideas on a cowboy and was given a horseshoe , a cowboy hat etc. Thanks to the members for submitting.I put them on a table with others I found for ideas to make something for his family to salute a cowboy that gave 100% to being a cowboy till the end.It was a tough decision with so many good ideas from here so I put it to a vote from company of relatives, well 80% went with a design which I made in photo, not to discredit the good intentions of what I recieved from here. The cowboy boot was a Steve Good pattern and the cowboy walking away with his saddle came from Gary Browning pattern book. Then I took the picture from his obit and made a pattern from Coyote program then shrunk it using rapid resizer to fit in middle. The lettering was made using caligraphy font on the web.The wood was from notty pine with walnut stand on lower.the back is cut with one eighth baltic birch and sprayed black.Even though a man leaves this physical world I had to point out to others who knew him like the wording on it states he had True Cowboy Spirit. Thanks again for all the help from this organization for all your input in this project, Damian
  13. Well a big challenge for me as a old dog is to learn and master Travis s Gimp and inkscape. The man is a genious at computer programs. We can only wish to do half of what he knows and we will all haveto agree that it's a good thing we have him in charge and Ill speak for everybody even if I have only been here for awhile. We all say thank you and Happy New Year! anybody want to second that feel free. Damian
  14. Women are going to loverhese very nice. Damian
  15. Thanks for all the replies, some projects are just worth doing over and this one was.I don't know Kevin why the pic don't show for you, haven't had anyone else say that.I don't even know why they went sideways as they are upright in my camera and up in my gallery. Sorry for any viewing problems.
  16. I promise the wife a long time ago I would redo our 3d wedding picture for the one I did many many years ago before I ever used a computer program.I did the first try using a light box under a enlargement of a wedding pic tracing it to cut.Not too bad but not the greatest either. As you can see a computer does a better job getting out all the details to cut.She likes it so a job done after years and something to look back on.Surprizing how things always get better with practise and time!
