  1. When I first started I broke blades often, especially since my very first project was a cutting board in 3/4" maple. I also tried to tell myself that the burn marks gave it that rustic look. Duhh! That was a long time ago. Now I don't seem to break blades any more but can tell when I have to make greater effort and just change the blade out. I tried spiral blades once but hated them. Looking at your results I might have to try Mike's 3/0 spirals or just admit that you are probably the Michelangelo of scrolling and continue on my bumpy road. Beautiful work.
  2. This is completely unscientific but my gut says go with the Hawk but only because there is a happy dog in the picture. How old and how much use on the Hawk? The Delta is similar to the DeWalt. The Hawk looks to be a bigger model in the pic than a DeWalt. Is the owner replacing the Hawk or doesn't care for scrolling? I wish I had your dilemma. I do have a happy dog and I like red. Go with the Hawk.
  3. Klingspor is tough to beat. You might equal them somewhere but for consistency I just go with them.
  4. Harbor Freight has a digital angle guage for $30, maybe even cheaper on sale in their stores. http://www.harborfreight.com/digital-angle-gauge-95998.html I have the $5 model from HF. Works well for me but I'm not building fine furniture. http://www.harborfreight.com/dial-gauge-angle-finder-34214.html For 90 degrees on my scroll saw I just use a piece of 2x4, cut, turn over, cut, check. Cut twice, measure once?
  5. My first saw was a Delta 16" variable speed. Vibration almost disappeared after putting it on a old table and throwing a couple sacks of Quickcrete on the bottom shelf. A great little saw! I miss it and might pick up another just for grins. They're really cheap if bought used. My current saw is a Type 1 DW788 I bought in 1995. Still using it but if replaced might go with a Hegner.
  6. I feel your pain. That is exactly why I quit doing stained glass. I loved making stained glass boxes and a few coworkers bought them. Then word got around and I found myself taking orders and turning out boxes as fast as possible.. I got behind, worked like crazy and burned out. Now a hobby is a hobby and I won't let it become a business. I make my puzzles and give them away as I please. I had a job and retired. If I still wanted to work I wouldn't have retired. Scrolling is fun and I want to keep it that way.
  7. I needed blades in a hurry for a pinewood derby workshop and picked up some delta blades at a big box. Never again. Variety and volume prices are just not at the big box stores. I use FD Superior Puzzle blades for my puzzles and Olson's for everything else. There are a lot of brand names out there and many probably come from the same factory. I buy from Mike and Sloan's because they have variety, price and they're nice people who give great service. The blades may be much the same but the supplier makes the difference as Obsessed Scroller brought out in his post. .
  8. I'm happy to be here and trying to absorb some knowledge from so many who know so much more than me. I've just returned to scrolling after a long absence and hope to have some fun. I cleaned the minor rust off my old type 1 DW788 and she's ready to work. Perhaps I'll be able to show a couple of projects soon and hope to give some suggestions to help others.
