  1. Welcome aboard Allen, I fairly new to both the site and scrolling myself and the folks hear have been willing to help and are friendly... I have had my saw for a couple of years myself and it has collected a lot of the wrong dust also ... I am still setting up shop now that I have moved and looking forward to making SAW dust.
  2. Welcome aboard Rich, Glad you are here and we are interested in seeing what you make (Pics ... Pics ... Pics). I pretty new to scrolling and have really made only a few things so far and they were just simple things - flat outlines like a very simple hat rack for my prospecting trailer of a mountain range near where I grew up in southern AZ. All my hobbies were put on hold for the last couple years as moved to Minnesota and am just really getting settled again. I am interested to see what wall art you create as I am working on a couple ideas for my trailer and office. Again, welcome aboard ...
  3. Welcome aboard John, Glad you joined and I'm pretty much new to scrolling and always watch for pics of others work ... post some pics when you get any.

  5. Welcome aboard Bill, As you can see, there are a great bunch of folks here!! Glad you are doing well and back into making sawdust ... I am a geographical transplant as well, me from Arizona and remain a Desert Rat at heart AND still wear bluejeans and a T-Shirt ... Well it was 11 degrees below zero this morning and I wore a jacket over my T-Shirt. Welcome again ....
  6. Hi Gregory, Welcome to the site!! I love this site and the wide geographical footstep it covers I have looked into 3-D Animal patterns a bit for my whirligig patterns and have ended up making my own from downloaded animal pics, then resizing them to get matching sizes to the the two 2-D sides. However, with that said, I usually end up drawing in the loose edges. I really think the one's artistic talents grow as he/she continues to develop and create new ideas and plans. In addition, you might check wood carving sites for 3-D animal patterns/templates. Good luck and welcome aboard...
  7. Hi Jerry, Welcome from Minnesota and I can relate to the unheated garage!! I just finished insulating, paneling, and heating my garage ... IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE in the winter months!!
  8. Hi Tom, Welcome aboard and happy holidays...

  12. Welcome aboard Vince ... Happy Scrolling and there always seems to be more ideas than one can work on!! Just jot down the ideas throughout the day and night ... and then just scroll --- all will come together or be made into little pieces Happy Holidays -- JC

    Hi!

Hi Kevin, Welcome from Minnesota ... I recently joined myself and find the folks here great!! Happy holidays JC
  15. I have designed a couple of new new Whirligigs and played with a couple of ideas for the gigs ... artwork and major ideas are all roughed in on paper. Now, if I can get the rest of my tools dug out, set up and tweaked after the move from Arizona. I unpacked the scroll saw and see that the table has shifted ... I'll get it set up and see if something is broke, bent, or just needs adjustment ... So many things were damaged and or can't be found ... yet (movers) The drill press is in and needs to be bolted to the floor, the saw table is still wrapped, but is rolling, the dust collector still needs the piping run, and the list goes on ... I guess that is why the garage is now heated ... I can work in there when the temp is too cold outside. As soon as I have any pics and can figure out what and how to post, I will post some pics ... Happy season ti all ... JC
  16. Hi Danny, The Ironwood is quite attractive when polished and would look nice in any project ! Good idea JC
  17. Iron wood should work well and grows in the southwest - I do not believe that a scroll saw project "Must" be out of wood though (unless wanted by the craftsman) and poly, brass, or aluminum would also work quite well, and there are metal blades available for the soft metals. I do not know the end project or size of the U-Joint, but am assuming it is a replica of some sort of vehicle. Just as a thought though, if the U-Joint is being added for bind-reduction in a long shaft (and not for realism) and in the range of +/- 1" O.D. or larger, a pin-gear arrangement would allow for a small amount of misalignment and could easily be made from wood ... oak for example is a hardwoods that is fairly stable and often used in whirligigs ... just a thought. JC
  18. Hi Jeff, The pics of your U-Joint is now visible -- I guess I needed to get Logged in before I could see it ... Duh . It looks good and should work -- I agree that if wood is used for the knuckle parts, it would need to be strong and I would think hard to prevent breaking and wobbling out at the pin holes. Dimensional uniformity and alignment accuracy would be necessary to reduce vibration as a whirligig main shaft can reach higher than imagined speeds during a strong wind. Great job ... John
  19. Hi all and thank you for such a warm welcome, I have enjoyed what few scrollsaw projects I have worked on; nothing like what I have seen on this site, but I am enjoying it and it keeps me out of my wife's way. I am developing this new hobby in woodworking; my old (and still my favorite) hobby was prospecting and as Minnesota has little to offer in gold prospecting, I need something to keep me busy during the long winters ... maybe I can make the trip to the Australia's outback some day . I still plan on venturing out to nearby states and even some western states not so close, for a "fix" in nugget hunting. Wishing all a great Christmas and a better New Year... John
  20. Hi all, I am new to the site and interested in using the scroll saw in making Whirligigs and thought this might be a good place to start. I recently retired and moved to Minnesota where my wife has family. I just finished insulating and heating my garage, and still setting up my shop ... I have a converted cargo trailer and camp out as I look at the new area I have moved to. I wish you all a great Christmas and Holiday Season ... John (JC)
  21. Hi Jeff, I am new to the site and was looking for whirligig info when I spotted your question. I realize it was an old (2009) post and was wondering if you got the U-Joint finished, how did it turn out and did you get a pic of the final joint? Merry Christmas and Season's Greetings from Minnesota U.S. John (JC)
