it has the holes in the side of the arm for the lower blade clamp, so it is an ultra model. if they showed the serial number you could call bushtom Mfg. and find out when it was built.i am guessing early to mid 1990s. they started putting the loc line air hose on in the late 90s. BTW the loc line kit is only about $20 from bushton. need to ask the brand of motor and see if it is an a/c motor or DC motor. doug

the shop fox does not look that great or very heavy duty. look for a used dewalt type 1 or hegner or hawk scroll saw. i am sure there are other saws that are good that someone else will mention.watch facebook marketplace as there are always tools for sale on there. doug

keep looking. deals are out there but you might have to drive a few hours to get one.several weeks ago i bought a bushton BM26 saw. not like new but pretty good shape for $400. i dont think it has had 20 hours of use. had to drive about 3 hours away to pick up, but was a good road trip with my son. change the location on the FB marketplace and search for hawk scroll saw, excalibur and hegners are great saws also.if you bring a small socket set with you the legs pop right off and the whole saw will fit in the trunk of a car.keep looking you will find a good saw. doug

kevin, do you have a link on ebay for that vacuum? doug

i dip most of my stuff in 50/50 BLO and odorless mineral spirits, but the original type of mineral spirits. not the green version. you can also mix your own danish oil too. 1/3 equal parts of BLO, thinner and poly. most of what i make is not going to be handled alot. i do spray the earrings and bookmarks and other items with satin deft .i also have an expensive detail spray gun but it is a pain to clean so i dont use it. lee valley sells a spray gun called the critter that attaches to a mason jar and is siphon feed and really easy to clean up. i think they are about $60-75. would work good on some bigger projects or just wait till you have alot to finish.forgot to mention you can also add some stain to the BLO mix if you want color. doug

sommerville design is no longer around. they made the type 1 dewalt saws and the excalibur saws until about 2003. after that it went overseas to china or tiawan. the new excalibur saws are made in china and from what a few people on here have said the quality is not as good. i have never had an excalibur saw but i started on a type 1 dewalt and it is still growing strong. some people on here have had ok results with the type 2 dewalt saws. are you not going to fix your hawk scroll saw? doug

gord, while you are at it order the air hose upgrade kit for $20. it replaces the clear hose and gives you the adjustable nozzle. it will get rid of the dust alot better. doug

MET motors and controllers out of mankato minn. is who made the motor and speed controller. could do an internet search and see if anyone else has and info to share. but i am with kevin on this one.clean the dust out and or change the pot out and see if that solves the problem. doug

i would call and talk to frank pozsgai and see what he has that will get him back up and running. if he does not have it he can probably make it for you. doug
-
i know pozsgai design had some of the hawk clamps. i dont know if he still does or not. might be worth a try. doug

gwinnett woodworkers has a 4 part series on tearing down and fixing the dewalt 788 scroll saws, search youtube for the videos. all total they are several hours long. lots of great info though doug

does anyone on here use supercut bandsaw blades? i bought the premium gold carbide blade for my 14 inch delta. 1/2 wide 3 hook. it cuts thru cherry like butter. my question is how long will it last? not that expensive either on amazon. it was like $30 with prime.this is not a true carbide tooth blade,it is carbide impregnated. my guess is the teeth have some carbide in them.i had posted about wanting a new bandsaw for resawing wood for scrolling. looked at all the stuff i cut and make and none is over 6 inches tall.i came to the conclusion i dont need a bigger saw.would like one, but i dont need one. plus anything really big i cut out of baltic birch plywood. doug

just got a supercut bandsaw blade for my delta 14 inch saw. went with the 1/2 3 hook gold blade premium gold carbide blade. man the blade cuts cherry like butter.only made a few cuts but hopeful the blade holds up for a while.they are only about $30 on amazon. does anybody else run this blade? if so how long will it last. doug

ray, good luck with the move if that happens. we did that 5 years ago and i dont want to do it again! only plus side was i found stuff i thought was lost for good!
-
ray, from what i have read online on other forums is it will fit, but the dowel pin holes may not line up. everything else should fit. a friend who is now gone had the riser block in his delta saw. i never felt like it could properly tension a blade. i dont know if the saw flexed or what. i never could do real well resawing with his saw. this is why i am looking for a new or used bandsaw that will only be set up to resaw. IIRC there was something about the bolt being a smaller size on the riser kit and you would have to buy a larger bolt and nut and washers. for me i am going to buy a resaw bandsaw and keep my delta 14 inch for cutting other stuff with smaller blades. doug

this is from another forum i go on,the dayton motors were used from 94-96. the guy who gave that info was a former RBI employee.they are really good saws and parts are still available. they sometimes take awhile to get from bushton.best if you call and talk to someone. congrats on your first saw.bushton manufacturing now uses MET motors and controls. doug

rolf, what horsepower motor is on your old delta 14 inch saw? mine only has a 3/4 hp motor. i thought about a riser block but i did not care for the one a friend of mine had. i did not feel like the blade could get properly tensioned. maybe i should revisit a riser and try to tune to snodgrass video, which btw i have. also have the carter guides on my saw. doug

les, the craftsman 101 series metal lathes were made by atlas. the smaller 109 series were not made by atlas, they were made by the ann arbor company. dont know if atlas made craftsman wood lathes. doug

i started that thread a few weeks ago. that grizzly saw looks like a good saw.the tension might just be a bad spring, its not always an expensive fix. i am very well rounded fixing stuff being a HVAC- maint tech for a living. unless the frame is twisted or something you should be able fix the saw. how long of boards were you cutting? what width blade are you using, i would say a 1/2 inch is the limit for a 14 inch saw. doug
-
how many of you resaw thicker boards to get thin wood for your scroll saw projects? most of what i cut is thin stock, but most of the lumber i get is from a family member who likes to build furniture and bigger stuff. i get the cut offs he does not want.oak, cherry, walnut and some maple or even ash.what size saw are most of you using for this? i dont think i could cut as much stuff out as i do if i had to buy all the thin stock i use.i am still looking to get a bigger saw than my old delta 14 inch, but if i buy a new saw i want this to be the last bandsaw i buy! you hear so many different stories on youtube and other places about how great or horrible one brand is over another.so if you resaw what size saw do you have and would you do anything different if you had to buy the saw again? never thought looking to buy a new saw would be so difficult or time consuming. doug

Everybody ready for a new gadget? Here ya go!
DME72 replied to OCtoolguy's topic in General Scroll Sawing
it is just an air activated switch assembly for a garbage disposal. they use them where they dont want to have a switch on the wall or dont have a wall to mount on. it goes in the hole where a sprayer would go. seen them, but never installed one yet.you could do the same thing with a foot switch also, except the air switch stays on until it is pressed again. doug -
ray, that really looks nice. never done any inlay myself, now i might have to try. that is bevel cut inlay i assume. the only downside to paduak it will turn brown if left in the sun for any amount of time. doug

went yesterday to our local store to look at bandsaws. they had the rikon 10-326 on display and a new jet also on display.the new jet is the welded steel frame like the rikons and laguna and others. they had sold the laguna 1412 a few days ago.both the jet and rikon are made in china. the jet seems somewhat more heavy duty in the manufacture. the guide post on the rikon seems kinda cheap. the rikon saw guide post looked to be about 7/8 or so but the jet was like 1 3/8 or so. the rikon upper guides were also canted left and by the looks it has a set screw on the inside which was set against the flat part on the guide rod.i am not sure if it was just crap assembly by the workers or do you really have to fiddle with these saws alot?fence rails on the rikon was kinda cheap, but that is ok as i would probably get a carter mag fence.does anyone else have any experience with the 14 inch rikon saws? lots of people on other forums talk about laguna bandsaws, some rave, some rant about poor customer service after the sale.i go for function more than looks in my tools, if something looks really bad i would paint it or clean it up. never thought looking for a new bandsaw would be so difficult.all three brands of saws are about the same price give or take a hundred dollars. doug

kevin, i buy my blades from either woodcraft or rockler. woodcraft has both olson and timberwolf. i find the olson blades ok for general work but like the timberwolf for resaw work.really like my carter guides on my delta saw also. big improvement over the standard blocks. main reason i want a larger saw is to resaw. i have so much cherry, walnut, oak and other woods in 1 inch thickness that i cut down for my scroll saw work. doug
