  1. Terrific Idea!
  2. Welcome from Colorado. You are a busy scroller. Your work looks very nice.
  3. I have to learn from others mistakes. At my age I don't have enough time left to make all of them myself. Thanks for posting.
  4. I can't imagine that I could accomplish what you have done. Your work is absolutely stunning. I'd have a hard time letting go of it.
  5. SWEET!
  6. Great design and wonderful execution.
  7. A wonderful, wonderful piece. Beautifully presented. Thanks.
  8. I think it is a great little item. If I attended craft shows it would certainly catch my eye.
  9. My grand daughter's name is spelled Gaby. I like your work, it looks great.
  10. Really nice work. What is the wood you used?
  11. I am finishing my project with spray cans using my grand children's school colors. The wood is plain pine so no staining. This the last time I'll use spray cans. This being my first project I have learned much from this site and the responses from other scrollers. Thank you so much!
  12. Call Hawk. They are very helpful.
  13. Sorry to be so late in responding but when this started I was not yet a member. Anyway I have just started scrolling. I have purchased two Hawks, 210VS ultra and a SS16 which is designed to be used on a ShopSmith. Both are in beautiful condition and are silky smooth. The reason I am impressed is there are many fewer parts to wear or malfunction. The engineering is simplistic and anyone with any mechanical ability at all can do repairs and maintenance. I have looked at the DeWalt 788 and the new Jet at Woodcraft and they do make my wallet water but are out of my financial reach. Not say'n the Hawk is the ultimate saw, I just happen to have them and they are working for me.
  14. Welcome to a great site. Always friendly and a great place to learn.
  15. Thanks for the replies. I am painting because the names are cut from plain 1X4 pine. It's what I have and it cuts OK. Until I get a little more proficient I don't want to use expensive woods. It's not just the cost but also Woodcraft is 30-40 minutes through miserable traffic. In addition I want to use my grandchildren's school colors. I have several air brushes. I used to be a model railroader. I think I'll set up a big box and try that. Stained pine is pretty Blah.
  16. I know many of you paint with spray cans. That is what I did when painting steam engine models I used to paint. I did it outside during nice warm weather on a newspaper on the lawn. I was permitted to that is the paint was green. The queen of clean does not like colored grass. I used a lot of John Deere green. However, I just scrolled the names of my four grand children and each has their favorite color. Also, the base and the name are contrasting colors. Painting outside is a pain especially in inclement weather. Do you have paint booths, a large cardboard box or what. I'd just like some ideas what others are doing. Also, excuse this simple question. Since I don't want to invest in eight colors of spray paint I have acrylic dollar paint from wally world. Does it need to be thinned? I tried using it with a very small brush and the brush strokes are very visible. I'm wondering if the paint is too thick or perhaps just dries too fast. Any help will be much appreciated.
  17. The Hawk casters are just at the back of the rear legs and are just slightly above the floor. Only a slight lift at the front of the saw causes the casters to make contact with floor and allow the saw to roll easily. Take another look at Rolf's photos. That should answer the question. I'm thinking of getting that set for my saw.
  18. I think I have read somewhere on this site MDF is used. Today I saw a co-workers name cut out of what appeared to be MDF. The material was about 1/2" thick and had a plexiglass mirror surface on one side. I am wondering where such material can be had and also thinking that MDF dust would be worse than regular sawdust. The name I saw was cut so perfectly it appears to have been done by CNC. So is anyone using MDF?
  19. Welcome from Colorado. You have come to a friendly place. Mark it as home.
  20. Really clever. I like them.
  21. WOW! Very nice.
  22. Welcome, welcome! You have found a nice place to lite.
  23. Howdy from Colorful Colorado. Scroll Saw Village is a nice place to be.
  24. I spent last evening and this morning cleaning up the new saw. I think the saw may not have seen hard use, rather a lot of neglect. It was filthy. It was carelessly lubricated with hardened oil and sawdust deposits. A little mineral spirit cleaned it up real well. The table has stains which I cannot remove. There were paint can rings which came off with a razor blade. The table was frozen and would not tilt. I removed the table and cleaned out the ways on which it rotated and it now it moves smoothly. Also the angle pointer turns out to be right on square. Someone removed the tension lever and wedge and replaced it with a round device and a knob. It works OK but I will order the proper parts. I want it to be original. I left some sawdust and my first cutting on the table.
